On September 29, Dior debuted its Spring 2021 collection in Paris. While the show certainly had some action between protestors and front-row celebrities, the real excitement, of course, happened on the runway.
Airy and ethereal dresses graced the runway, with Christian Dior emblazoned spring windbreakers quickly following suit. However, the real head-turner was the beauty. The beauty on a fashion show is always compelling because of how it complements the clothes. From bold statements to natural skin, there’s always something to look for. For its Spring 2021 show, Dior focused everything on the eyes. It was an overload of eyeliner, and it worked.
Peter Philips, the creative and image director for Dior Makeup, was the mastermind behind the show's look: A daring and bold eye makeup that, pardon the pun, caught everyone's eye — whether they were seated front-row or watching virtually on Dior.com. “I wanted to focus on the eyes and emphasize them powerfully by framing them with very dense, matte black liner,” Peter said of his creation. His goal was to create “a strong graphic look,” and thanks to some dramatized eyeliner and coated lashes, he nailed it.
While they may appear thick, Peter actually says the line is “balanced." “Neither thin nor thick, but it literally frames the eyes by intensifying them,” he said about the strokes he carefully traced to frame the models' eyes.
Runways are no stranger to amplified beauty looks, especially eyes, but Peter managed to flawlessly incorporate drama while still leaving space for the models' natural complexions and lips to shine. This, in turn, made the eyes pop even more, especially against the various hairstyles from cornrows, to afros, to curly tresses, and headwraps.
Take a page out of Peter’s book and try your hand at the runway look yourself with Dior's liner and mascara to amplify your luminous skin.
