‘Tis the season of reboots, and Disney+ is the latest streamer to hop on the trend. As anticipation around HBO’s Harry Potter series reboot (and its high-profile casting) grows, Disney+ is also tapping into the nostalgia by ordering a pilot for a gender-swapped reboot of Holes.
Starring Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson, Eartha Kitt, Dulé Hill, and more, Walt Disney Pictures released Holes in 2003 as a feature film. Now, it looks like Louis Sachar's beloved story will be adapted for the small screen, and LaBeouf's Stanley Yelnats, the main character of the story, will be gender-swapped.
Below, find out everything we know so far about the gender-swapped Holes series reboot — from the people working hard to make it happen to its very announcement.

When was the Holes reboot announced?
Variety exclusively reported that Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a rebooted Holes television series on January 7, 2025. It's worth noting that a pilot order does not mean a full series will come to fruition, so take the announcement with a grain of salt.
What will the Holes reboot be about?
If it gets picked up after the pilot, much like the 2003 movie, the potential Holes rebooted show will adapt Louis Sachar's book of the same name. The YA novel was published in 1998 and follows the story of a 14-year-old boy named Stanley Yelnats, who is wrongfully accused of theft and sent to the correctional Camp Green Lake desert in Texas, where he unearths — quite literally —mysteries relating to his family's curse.
The rebooted version of Holes would follow the same plot, but the role of Stanley will be gender-swapped. Per Variety, the project's official logline is as follows: “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”
Who is working on the Holes reboot?
Alina Mankin — known for her work in Katy Keene, Lodge 49, and The Mindy Project — will serve as the writer and executive producer for the Holes reboot. Yellowjackets producer Liz Phang is also on board as showrunner and executive producer, while Drew Goddard will executive produce alongside Sarah Esberg via Goddard Textiles. Goddard's previous executive producing credits include The Martian, Lost, The Good Place, and more, while Esberg has worked on Okja, Moonlight, The OA, and more.
“My mom’s been a schoolteacher for her whole life,” Goddard told Variety in an interview. “She always knows what ‘the kids’ are into long before everyone else does. Holes was the first book she suggested to me – this was back in the late ‘90s – and she was positive it was going to be a phenomenon. It feels good to bring it full circle for Mrs. Goddard and her sixth-grade class.”
Per Variety, the pilot is being produced by Walden Media, who also produced the 2003 movie. No casting hopes or announcements for the pilot have yet been made public.
Is there a trailer for the Holes reboot?
At the time of writing, there is no trailer or pictures for the Holes reboot as it's only a pilot order, but we will keep you updated if the status of the project changes.
