Dominic Fike said he's unclear on whether or not his Euphoria character would be returning for season three and recounted when the show's team hired a sober coach for him on set.
In a recent interview with VarietyStudio while attending the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, Fike opened up about his ongoing battle with addiction and how he's played addicts in film and TV. The actor and musician stars in the comedy-drama Little Death, which was directed by Jack Begert and premiered at the film festival. Much like his Euphoria character Elliot, Fike's role in Little Death is also that of a person with substance abuse issues. But when comparing how the two experiences differ, Fike said he was assigned a sober coach on Euphoria who was “just some random lady.”
“We had nothing in common,” Fike said about the sober coach. “We didn’t come from the same places or the same problems. It was hard to take advice from someone like that or give a sh*t.”
Fike added that it was “a lot easier” to speak to his friend and director Jack Begert on the set of Little Death while playing such a challenging role. When asked if Fike was going to return to Euphoria for the HBO show's third season, the actor said he was unsure. “[It] would be dope,” Fike said, but added, “I don’t really talk to them anymore.”
The actor has been open about his struggle with addiction, including during an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe last June when he revealed that he was almost fired from Euphoria for his drug use. In the interview, Fike mentioned the sober coach that creator and director Sam Levinson assigned to him, noting at the time that “it did not work.”
“I was so f*cked up during a lot of that show. It was really bad,” Fike continued. “I was reprimanded for it. I almost, you know, got kicked off the show… They were like, ‘Bro, you cannot be doing this.'”
The status of HBO's highly successful teen drama, which stars Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, and more, has been murky since the Hollywood strikes and other Sam Levinson projects halted its production. In May 2023, executives said that they hope the third season will premiere by 2025 and recently said that Levinson is writing the script. The finale of season two aired in 2022 — which feels like a lifetime ago when fans saw the characters' lives in utter shambles. Jacob Elordi, who plays Nate Jacobs, recently joked that he hopes filming starts soon, otherwise they'll have to “Benjamin Button me or something.”
As to whether Dominic Fike's character will make a return is still up in the air.
