It was big night for Black women and people of color at the Emmys, as history was made a few times throughout the night. Abbott Elementary's iconic Sheryl Lee Ralph, who has been gracing our screens and stages since the late ‘70s, won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series — the first Black woman to win the award in 35 years. (See here incredible, moving speech here.) Zendaya took home the prize for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the youngest two-time winner for acting in Emmys history and the first Black woman to win the award in that category twice.
Quinta Brunson, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her show Abbott Elementary, became the third Black writer in history and only the second Black female writer to ever win the award. Lizzo won her first Emmy of her career on Monday night, putting her halfway to EGOT status. The singer won the Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program for her Prime Video show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.
Netflix's Squid Game, the streamer's most-watched series ever, was the first foreign-language series to earn a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk won the prize for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the episode “Red Light, Green Light,” and series star Lee Jung-jae became the first South Korean actor, first actor of Asian descent, and first actor from a non-English show to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
All in all, it was a stellar night with many long-awaited and well-deserved firsts. See the complete, updated list of Emmys 2022 winners below.
