The first Wicked movie is right around the corner, and the cast is sharing even more behind-the-scenes stories. Case in point: Ethan Slater revealing he played not one, not two, but three characters at once for his audition.
In a new interview for People's new special Wicked edition, Slater shared details about his Wicked audition tape for the first time. Speaking to the publication, Slater revealed he played not only Boq, the character he was auditioning for, but also Ariana Grande's Glinda and Elphaba's sister Nessarose, played by Marissa Bode in the movie, for his audition tape, a move he admits was “so bold.”
“I did two scenes and sang Boq’s songs, 'The Ozdust Ballroom' and 'March of the Witch Hunters,' which is the second movie," Slater recounted, “but I should say that I didn’t have anyone to read with at the time, so the tape I sent in is me playing Glinda and Nessa off camera, and then me reading with a video of myself.” Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do!
Anyways, Slater's bold decision paid off, and he got the role of the Munchkin man. “I can’t believe I got away with it. But I knew I wanted to take my time with it ... and I couldn’t get somebody to spend that time with me, so I just did it with myself,” he added.
Now that we've heard about Ariana Grande's audition, we've heard about Cynthia Erivo's audition, and we've heard about Ethan Slater's audition, we just have one question: Who do we need to get in contact with to see these audition tapes?
