Failed Capitol Coup Immortalized in #BussItChallenge TikTok Trend

A plot twist!

2021 has gotten off to a very dramatic start, but the latest TikTok trend is one way social media is processing the disturbing coup attempt at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. The #BussItChallenge has been making the rounds on TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, showcasing women on camera, bare-faced and dressed in their finest quarantine attire, before they drop it low and appear instantly glammed up.

Popularized by Black women, the #BussItChallenge exists in the transformation video genre, not dissimilar to trends like the #DontRushChallenge from last year. The #BussItChallenge shines a spotlight on Dallas rapper Erica Banks, whose “Buss It” track (which samples Nelly’s “Hot In Herre”) has currently climbed to no. 8 on the Apple iTunes charts despite being released in the summer of 2020.

Though the #BussItChallenge has now become the envy of those who have cracked knees and are vitamin D deficient, another version of the challenge has been entertaining the masses. Creator @Yopjay shared a video that started similar to the others, with the user clad in a backpack, before it pivoted to footage of the insurrectionists who stormed Capitol Hill. Instead of a club-ready outfit, we see people fall to the ground as they attempt to scale the wall by hand.

Creator @thejesslyfe also shared a Capitol-themed take on the challenge. Looking in the mirror, the creator begins watching the footage and slowly backs away in horror. Together, the videos underline the bizarre, abhorrent behaviour of hundreds of angry Trump supporters.

The world continues to wait for news of more arrests of those who overtook the Capitol, and House democrats have introduced a new article of impeachment against President Donald Trump in light of his incitement of the violent siege. Meanwhile, we can always count on TikTokers for helpful jokes about the absurdity of the Trump supporters who thought the rage in their hearts would help them morph into Spiderman.
