It's officially New York Fashion Week, and the shows have begun. But contrary to popular belief, the streets are the real runway. New York street style is known for an eclectic mix of high fashion, vintage, and streetwear. Whether your look is bold and unconventional or a more minimal approach to style, everyone can be the main character in NYC. It's a place where people are encouraged to be themselves and express their individuality.
Of course, different cities have their unique street-style scenes. Every day, we live in a sort of ongoing global perspective of fashion. But this week, the spotlight is on New York City and all the fashion girlies who inhabit it!
The fashion week streets are often a breeding ground for mainstream fashion trends, swarming with stylists, models, influencers, and celebs. We catch up with seven fashion editors to discuss how they dress for the busiest week of their careers.
Asia Milia Ware @ The Cut
Asia is known for her bold fashion statements. She likes to play with silhouettes, colors, and structural accessories. When Asia walks in, the cameras come out. When asked to explain her NYFW street style, she says, "Nothing I wear is ordinary. Think of a walking piece of art. I like my outfits to tell a story. When someone asks who I'm wearing, I'm excited to share for two reasons: I'm very intentional about the designers I support, and it's most likely not in stores yet!"
Cassandra Pintro @ Vogue
Cassandra is in her uniform-dressing era. She's all about sustainability and creating a capsule wardrobe. Recently, she decided not to shop for the next 365 days and has challenged others to join her with the launch of The Consumption Project. "I love to be a girl on the go, and sometimes that requires a bit of an incognito look," Cassandra says. “Since I've committed to not shopping for a year, I'm leaning on my go-to items, like my NY baseball cap, which is a must-have for me, and my signature Dior saddle for a perfect high-low effect.”
Kat Thomas @ Teen Vogue
Kat is all about comfort and functionality with a quirky accent. "I love mixing color and texture. And fashion week is the perfect time to be adventurous," she says. "I know it doesn't seem like a closet staple, but everyone needs a sequined skirt this season. It's the perfect addition to any outfit, and the way the light hits this Tibi number is exquisite." Noting that navigating from show to show can be stressful, she says, “I always need a bag that can fit a second pair of shoes because I'll definitely need to change.”
Blake Newby Fashion/Beauty Maven
Blake is a showstopper! Miss Newby is all about her statement pieces. “I personally like to do that by playing on elaborate shapes," she explains. "If it’ll make heads turn or is completely over the top, you’ll see me in it.”
Kristen Nichols @ Who What Wear
Kristen likes to add a bit of flare to a classic look. “This season, I mostly feel like leaning into classics for my fashion month wardrobe,” she says. "But the editor in me can't resist a great accessory, including these pierced slingbacks from Tory Burch. Right now, I like to pair everything with great flats — they immediately make every look feel modern."
Tarah-Lynn Saint-Elien @ Cosmopolitan
Tarah kicked off fashion week with the Harlem's Fashion Row Award Show. When asked about her look, she says, “I wore this asymmetrical neon gown and jewel-tone earrings. Showing up bright and bold illustrates confidence and shows you're all about having fun with fashion.”
Naomi Elizeé @ Vogue
Naomi is the street-style champ! She's no stranger to being flagged down for a pic of her outfit. When asked how she captures the attention of street-style photographers, she says, “I wear fun pieces that make me feel confident. I let my energy carry the look. It's all in the strut! Look good, feel good.”
