The particular horrors of Kesha's ongoing legal battle with alleged rapist Dr. Luke are enough to inspire outrage on their own, yet what's even more shocking is how many similar admissions have followed. We're starting to hear people speak out about sexual abuse, whether it's being used as a means of barter for career advancement or not. The latest is Grimes, who, in her latest interview with Rolling Stone, describes how producers have literally threatened to not finish a track unless she had sexual intercourse with them.

"I don't know enough about the specifics of Kesha's situation, because it seems very complicated," she said. "But I will say that I've been in numerous situations where male producers would literally be like, 'We won't finish the song unless you come back to my hotel room.' If I was younger or in a more financially desperate situation, maybe I would have done that."

She goes onto describe the music industry as a "hostile environment," and cites that as the reason why she thinks few women are producers. What we know is that young women – whether artists or not – are consistently the targets of this kind of harassment and abuse, and though hearing stories like Kesha's, Grimes' (and countless others) while painful, are necessary to beginning the kinds of conversations we need to be having to change this.
