Our dedication to fashion trends in this day and age is truly unparalleled. Thanks to celebs like Hailey Bieber, Margot Robbie, and Halle Bailey, 2023’s trends have ranged from “vanilla girl” aesthetic, Barbiecore, and Mermaidcore to name a few. But can we talk about a more subtle trend that has been sweeping the nation? Having your significant other’s initials on your jewelry.
We know nothing says romance like a little bling. Historically and notably, giving jewelry as a present and receiving jewelry have been synonymous with romance – generally a symbol of commitment and devotion (diamonds are a girl’s best friend, after all!). Lately, however, the newest trend to enter the chat is specifically having your significant other’s initials on your jewelry. Will this trend dethrone the diamond ring as king? (gasp!) Say it isn’t so. Maybe not to the extreme of dethroning, but it is proving to be popular and timeless in its own way.
While the meaning is still synonymous with romance, there seems to be something even more special about publicly plastering your significant other’s initials for the whole world to see by way of bling. Accessories are an additional form of self-expression, after all, so this different type of public display of affection makes sense. We have seen personalized partner jewelry time and time again, both in movies and in real life. I mean, who could forget the iconic example in High School Musical 2 when heartthrob Troy Bolton gives Gabriella a necklace with a “T” (“as in Troy”) charm on it? Nothing says you’re what I’ve been looking for more than that.
And that’s not all. Over the years, celebrities have been publicly appearing, making subtle romantic statements via wearing jewelry featuring their significant others’ initials. Beauty trendsetting queen Hailey Bieber has recently been seen shining bright in "B" bling, wearing a custom Alex Moss initial necklace, white t-shirt, black tennis skirt, and black ballet slippers while on a stroll with her hubby in Cali. She’s also recently been seen wearing her "J" ring. But a true testament to this trend’s long-lasting charm? All the way back in 2018, the newly-engaged Bieber wore a white dress, diamond ring, and “J” charm necklace in NYC as a tribute to Justin Bieber. How charming.
If you haven’t been keeping up with the Kardashians, Kourtney Kardashian has her “TB” (as in Travis Barker—not Troy Bolton) two-piece necklace combo gifted to her by her longtime stylist Dani Michelle. Very rock and roll. Same, same, but different: Bad Bunny has been spotted sporting a “K” necklace this year and not just any necklace, but one that is pretty much the same as Kendall Jenner's “K” necklace. In a not-so-surprising chain of events that followed, there’s been speculation as to whether Kendall gifted it to Bad Bunny. Last, but certainly not least, earlier this summer at the Barbie premiere, Ryan Gosling was giving major Kenergy vibes when he wore a salmon pink suit with an “E” necklace – presumably in tribute to his partner of 12 years, Eva Mendes.
Whether you are in the market for some personalized ice and want to be bold with gold via the Mejuri letter necklace or go with a classic cursive necklace from Tiffany & Co. 's Elsa Peretti’s alphabet collection, there are plenty of options to choose from. Just in time for cuffing season.
