Just last month, Hailey Bieber was seen sporting a certain pair of fluorescent sneakers while out in London, England. With their electric yellow-orange gradient and matching laces, the square-toed shoes appeared to be the perfect combination of kitsch and cool, sporty and chic. This week, they were revealed to be a part of the unreleased Shox Mule MR4 collaboration between Martine Rose and Nike.
The Nike Shox system was introduced in 2000 for shock absorption and has since taken on a plethora of varying colors and silhouettes. The British-Jamaican designer's own reinvention of this classic shoe comes in the form of faux slides, including the shoes Bieber wore, as well as a blue-purple gradient colorway and a black version with accents of purple and paint-splattered hues of green and gold. Each pair features padded uppers, black swooshes, and the distinctive midsole spring heels that define the shoe. (You can see pics via Highsnobiety.)
The trend of elevating typically athletic silhouettes has been on the rise for a while, but it's popping off against celebrities recently. Aside from Bieber, Addison Rae recently embraced the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 sneakers, BLACKPINK's Lisa jumped on the Salomon bandwagon, and Bella Hadid (and TikTok) even gave the Hoka Hoparas her stamp of approval. That's not to mention the chokehold that Adidas Sambas have had over street style within the past years. Though Sambas and Salomons might be a bit vanilla, Bieber's Shox mules are the newest addition to a lineage of it-sneakers with a controversial twist. (After all, we're at a moment when styles such as the outdoorsy gorpcore have migrated from the niche corners of the internet and into mainstream fashion.)
Well-versed in seamlessly dressing for style and comfort on the daily, Bieber wore the lace-up slides with a beige trench coat that fell to her ankles, a cropped white tank, and lowrise baggy jeans. For accessories, she opted for a pair of skinny black sunglasses and a black Miu Miu handbag, reserving all the color and attention for the vibrant shoes.
Although the official release date for the Martine Rose Nike Shox Mule MR4 collab has yet to be announced, we're eagerly awaiting the drop and are looking forward to seeing how Bieber shoxs the fashion world next. (Sorry, we had to.)
