Strap in because this one is hard. There’s a canonical answer to what happens to High School Musical couple Troy and Gabriella, and it’s not necessarily a happy update. Word on the street is implying that our generation’s most iconic high school sweethearts are allegedly not doing great.
In the last episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+, we get a handful of updates about our favorite Wildcats. Corbin Bleu, playing an all-grown-up East High alum 15 years later, tells us, “It is our 15-year high school reunion. My character Chad is married to Taylor. Martha is a world-class choreographer. Troy and Gabriella are in couple’s therapy. Ryan is happily partnered.”
Notably, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens (and Ashley Tisdale) don't actually appear in the episode — creator Tim Federle told The New York Times, “All of their reps were very gracious, but I could tell with schedules and other obligations, it was not going to happen.”

Okay! See, what Troy and Gabriella are going through doesn’t have to be a terrible thing. Couple’s therapy can be a really important and healing instrument for couples, right? Maybe Troy and Gabriella are working on themselves. What I want to know is why this reads like that one verse in “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeran. We at Teen Vogue are choosing to remain optimistic about the whole thing. In the spirit of journalism, we think the true story here is why that class reunion update sounded targeted. It might be a bad year for one girl who wanted to wear her boyfriend’s initials on a chain around her neck, but it doesn’t have to be for all of them.
The final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is available to stream now on Disney+.
