After what feels like 1,000 years (but was really just months) of debates, rallies, town halls, TikToks, podcast sit-downs and poll chasing, the 2024 presidential election is finally drawing to a close. This election season had everything: a last-minute candidate replacement, Kamala Harris being deemed Brat, assassination attempts, Taylor Swift deep fakes, increasingly fascistic rhetoric, shifts at McDonald’s, and so much more.
Yes, Donald Trump, 78, will become the oldest president in US history, and the first with a felony conviction. But with campaign season behind us, the 2024 presidential election also brings a lot of firsts worth celebrating. From state elections to nationwide firsts, we’re closing out the year by making history.
Here’s a (not at all comprehensive) list of the historic milestones brought in by the 2024 election:
Sarah McBride is elected to Congress in Delaware, becoming the first out transgender person to serve in the US Congress.
Emily Randall is projected to become the first out LGBTQ+ Latina to serve in the US Congress.
Lisa Blunt Rochester is elected the first woman and first Black person to represent Delaware in the US Senate.
Angela Alsobrooks is elected Maryland's first Black senator. Blunt Rochester and Alsobrooks will be the first two Black women to serve in the US Senate at the same time.
Julie Johnson is elected to Congress in Texas, becoming the first out LGBTQ+ person elected to Congress from a Southern state.
This is a developing story and will be updated as election results are confirmed.
