Winter is here in full effect — and although we secretly want to hide in our apartments and drink hot cocoa all day, we must venture out into subzero degrees weather.

The air may be frigid, but there's no reason to sacrifice style this winter — especially with all of the refreshing ways designers are reimagining cold-weather clothing. From Milly’s cropped ribbed sweater to Hugo Boss’ detachable turtleneck, there's more stylish winter gear on the market than ever. It's the perfect time to ditch those typical uniforms of hoodies and leggings, and adapt the age-old trend that everyone can master: layering.

The layering trend gives you the chance to remain comfortable no matter where the temperature may fall. But there's a science to creating the perfect, layered outfit. The key is to think outside the box. My favorite layering hack? Reimagining your summer attire. The most satisfying luxury of layering is not having to get rid of your warm-weather wardrobe. It’s all about being mindful and clever: try layering your favorite minis from summer with thick knit cardigans from Lauren Manoogian, for example.

Another trick of the trade when it comes to layering is learning how to transform apparel into accessories. Take your old sweater and wrap it into a scarf, just in case the weather drops and you need the extra layer. You can even wrap it around your waist or across your chest to elevate your look. Ahead, find 5 layering tricks to make your winter clothes less boring.
