This post contains major spoilers for Tell Me Lies season 3.
Since its premiere in 2022, Hulu's Tell Me Lies has become one of the streamer's hit shows, and things have only gotten bigger for the show's third and final season, which premiered in January. The season reportedly generated five million views globally across Disney+ and Hulu in the first week, up 150% from season one's premiere.
Based on Carola Lovering's 2018 best-selling novel of the same name, Tell Me Lies follows the “tumultuous but intoxicating relationship” between Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) over eight years, told through dual timelines set in 2008 (and later 2009) and 2015.
If you came to Tell Me Lies looking for a feel-good rom-com, you've come to the wrong place; the show is more like a bumpy roller-coaster. “Although their relationship begins like any typical campus romance, they quickly fall into an addictive entanglement that will permanently alter not only their lives but the lives of everyone around them,” the official synopsis reads. Meaghan Oppenheimer served as creator and executive producer for the show, the latter alongside Emma Roberts.
Following the success of the first season, Tell Me Lies returned for its sophomore season in fall 2024 with more drama, more secrets, and more cliffhangers. Now the show has officially reached its conclusion with the season three finale, but not all questions have been answered. If you want to know everything about Tell Me Lies season three and its finale, we've got you covered below.
How does Tell Me Lies season 3 end?
Throughout all three seasons of Tell Me Lies, things have been building up to Bree and Evan's wedding, and, of course, season three of Tell Me Lies does end with the wedding—or more like the aftermath of the wedding, with Britney Spears' "Toxic" as the perfect needle drop.
First, let's go back to the original '00s timeline. Leading into the finale, Bree has found out that Evan cheated on her with Lucy, and so, out of spite, she leaks the tape Stephen had filmed of Lucy admitting to lying about being raped.
Lucy, of course, believes it's Stephen who leaked the tape and confides in Bree and Pippa. After the mess, Pippa reveals to Bree that Lucy lied about being raped to protect her, as she knew Pippa was the one who was actually assaulted but was too scared to be vocal about it. Bree immediately regrets the leak. But, alas, the deed is done, and the tape gets Lucy expelled from Baird.
Bree is also ambushed by Oliver, Marianne, Amanda, and her mom, who threaten to revoke her scholarship if she doesn't stop meddling in their indiscretions. And she gets back together with Evan, just before Wrigley comes to see her in her room. Crying about it all, she simply destroys the SD card containing Lucy's tape.
Stephen's Yale dream gets crushed too, as he gets a call that his acceptance has been rescinded following an anonymous call reporting him for online harassment and pornographic distribution. (Well, anonymous for Stephen, because we as the audience get a hint that it was Wrigley.)
Ah, also, before Stephen's acceptance is rescinded, Diana confronts him to say that she lied and actually aced her LSAT, and that she's decided not to go to Yale to avoid him; she has settled for Stanford instead, despite that putting a strain on her budding romance with Pippa. (Of course, that is part of the viewers' knowledge, but Diana does not share it with Stephen.)
In 2015, we see Bree and Wrigley finally opening up about their unresolved feelings for each other at her engagement party, which quickly leads to them having sex. And, as Stephen reveals in his bomb speech toward the end of the episode, they continued the affair until the wedding.
Back at the wedding, we see Pippa and Diana are happy in their new relationship, and it is revealed that Diana actually went to Yale as she originally intended, given that Stephen was out of the picture.
Bree and Evan are married, and Stephen breaks things off with his fiancée, Lydia. When he notices that the voice note of Evan confessing to cheating on Bree with Lucy had not affected the wedding, he puts two and two together and realizes Bree already knew, and that it was Bree who leaked Lucy's tape and got her expelled, which he quickly confirms with a one-on-one. He also realizes that Bree's secret caller is Wrigley.
Then he grabs the mic to end it all: He reveals Bree's tape secret, admits to hating Evan, exposes Bree and Wrigley's affair, exposes Lucy and Evan's college hookup and the fact that Bree already knew about it (despite the secret consuming Lucy), and also shares that he and Lucy had sex that same morning.
“Stephen collects information and weaponizes it,” Jackson White, who plays the character, previously told Teen Vogue. “He feels safe having control over people. I think that’s what he was taught; it’s inherited behavior. He also requires some type of psychological stimulation, and he gets pleasure [from] other people’s demise. He’s very good at making himself feel better.”
After all those weaponized revelations (and some cake fighting), Stephen asks Lucy to drive into the sunset with him—which she does, only to be left stranded at a random gas station when she goes to get them both coffee. A cover of “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service plays as a mirror to season one, Lucy laughs manically, and that's a wrap.
Speaking to Teen Vogue, Grace Van Patten, who plays Lucy, said she believes her character's laugh “weirdly, is positive.” She added, “I think it’s the first time she’s shocked, and then it turns into a relief of, I think maybe that’s the last time I’m going to deal with that. It’s like Lucy is laughing at it, so you feel like you can laugh at it."
Van Patten continued, "I just think it’s hopeful. I think she might be free. She might have learned her lesson. I think it’s a cool thing, too, for the audience to just think about whether he planned this or he did it on a whim. It’s fun that it’s all up to interpretation: Is Lucy ruined or is she free?”
When did they announce Tell Me Lies season 3 would be the final season?
After much speculation, series creator and showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer announced that Tell Me Lies season three would indeed be the final season of the hit Hulu show on February 16, just hours before the premiere of the season's finale, titled "Are You Happy Now, That I'm on My Knees?"
“After three amazing seasons of Tell Me Lies, tonight's episode will be the series finale,” Oppenheimer wrote on Instagram. “This was always the ending my writing team and I had in mind, and we are insanely proud of it. Your incredible response to this season inspired us to explore whether there was another organic way to continue the story, but ultimately we felt it had reached its natural conclusion. My main goal has always been to protect the quality of the show and give you the best experience I can give you.”
Aside from cliffhangers galore, Tell Me Lies has made the streamer's best original shows list and has steadily remained in the top 15 series, so people were eagerly anticipating a potential renewal for a fourth season. But the crew seems to be sticking to its original plan.
Tom Ellis, Oppenheimer's IRL husband, who played Oliver on the show, already teased the end of the series during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in summer 2025, while in the thick of season three production. When asked if he thought season three would be the last one, the actor replied, “I think so, yeah. I think Meaghan has written it to be the last season for sure.”
Speaking to Decider in 2024, Oppenheimer already seemed to tease her infatuation with a three-season run: “I think most shows nowadays do well with three seasons. I think that’s a very clean, good number to me—especially when it’s something that’s a smaller story, not a big procedural thing. I would rather have something end when it’s good than just drag it out too long.”
Where are the characters after the Tell Me Lies season 3 finale?
While that's up to viewers to interpret, Meaghan Oppenheimer and the cast have shared their two cents on what happens next after the explosive wedding.
Speaking to Deadline, Oppenheimer said she believes Pippa and Diana are happy and together after the wedding, though “who knows if they end up together forever.” She also described Bree and Wrigley as “soulmates” and confirmed they indeed end up getting together, and Bree's marriage was probably immediately annulled.
“Despite all this carnage, you get the sense that these two are going to find a way to work it out [with that smile at the end of the wedding], because now that everything’s exploded," Oppenheimer explained, "they have nothing left to lose, and they don’t need to lie and hide anything.”
“I want that happy ending for them," Oppenheimer told TheWrap. "But happy endings are also kind of boring to watch, at least a whole season of a happy ending—it’s the explosion. Anything after that is going to be a little bit anticlimactic.”
As for Bree and Lucy's friendship? Oppenheimer told Deadline that she believes that's a thing of the past. In fact, she said, “Lucy probably never talks to any of these people again.”
Oppenheimer continued, “Maybe Bree and Lucy become friends again 10 years from now, when they’re in their 30s, but I think they need an actual break. And Stephen? I think he moves on and never looks back; [he] got what he wanted and moves on to his next victim. Evan, I think, will be okay, but Evan needed this to blow up in his face. He did not deserve Bree.”
Speaking to Teen Vogue, Branden Cook, who plays Evan, agreed that, in his mind, there's definitely “no more marriage” for his character and Bree after the finale. “Maybe Evan moves back home to wallow and soak in his feelings for a very long time. I just feel like he’s such a sensitive boy that it’s going to be a hard fix for him."
Cook added, "I don’t know where he goes, though; I didn’t even think about it, honestly. But I’m sure he would be very sad.”
Grace Van Patten also has her own theories about Lucy's future. “I get excited for Lucy after the screen cuts to black,” she told Teen Vogue. “I don’t know if Meaghan agrees with this, but this is my interpretation of it: This moment forces Lucy to really reevaluate herself and how she’s been living her life. I think having ties to all these college friends, where they’re so caught up in these lies and these secrets—now that her friend group is ruined, I think she’s free from that and has the ability to start fresh. Stephen gave her her last bit of confirmation that they should not be together."
Van Patten added, "I see her finally going to India or making new friends, or maybe, within time, she tries to mend things with Bree after some time and space. I do think that friendship was meaningful, and I see them working things out after the dust settles, and I think she’ll get her priorities in check. I genuinely have hope for that.”
“I truly think friendship can stand the test of anything,” Cat Missal, who plays Bree, told Teen Vogue. “Even though they've done toxic things to each other, they do love each other genuinely. I think that's where a lot of the heart of the show lies, too, within their friendship, even though it's built on lies.”
As for Stephen's future, White has his own theory: “He probably just drives off into a ditch by accident after he leaves that gas station. I think that’s what everybody would want, right?” he quipped.
For the secondary characters, Oppenheimer shared with TheWrap, “Oliver probably got #MeToo’d” and “he and Marianne have probably long divorced.”
Could Tell Me Lies continue beyond season 3?
You know what they say: Never say never. While Meaghan Oppenheimer, the crew, and the cast seem more than content with the series finale, with more than one person calling it “perfect,” there's always a chance they would want to explore more at some point—especially given how popular Tell Me Lies is.
Though we wouldn't hold our breath for anything as of now, there's a chance that Tell Me Lies, as an IP, could be revived at some point with additional content, whether that's via spinoffs, reunions, documentaries, or more.
When asked about the conclusion of season three by Decider, Oppenheimer said that “this was definitely the ending I had in mind from the beginning, to a certain degree. But, obviously, things change.” Oppenheimer also said the idea of a spin-off movie, à la The Summer I Turned Pretty, is “cool.” Whether that was a safe answer or a future plan down the line remains to be seen, but again, as it stands right now, Tell Me Lies as we know it has officially ended, and Meaghan Oppenheimer is already working on new projects.
“I think it’s such a privilege to know when a show is ending and be able to write an ending and quit while you’re ahead,” Oppenheimer told Deadline. “For me, it was just about do I think there’s another season in here that’s going to be as good, that’s not going to feel like a completely different show? And I felt like it would have to be completely re-imagined. The framing device [of the wedding] is over."
Oppenheimer told Variety, “This story, to me, was always a closed-ended story. It has a beginning, middle, and end. This was always a question of what happens to this friend group when there’s a poisonous dynamic at the center? And what happens when they reunite years later? So I felt like this should be the ending…. We definitely talked about whether there are any other organic ways to move forward. We just kept coming back to the same thing: It felt like anything else would feel like an epilogue.”
