Is Taylor Swift finally making her long-awaited return to the Met Gala in 2026? That's the question many fans asked as the star-studded event approached. Sadly, it was not to be—Taylor Swift skipped the 2026 Met Gala, and she definitely did not attend with Travis Kelce.
Every year when the Met Gala rolls around, the temptation to guess about Taylor Swift's Met Gala attendance goes up (people even bet on it). Last year, many people thought Swift and Travis Kelce would be making their joint Met Gala debut; but the couple skipped the event, despite reportedly being invited. Allegedly, they “could not make it work as a result of their schedules.”
The Met Gala 2026, with the theme "Costume Art" and the dress code “Fashion Is Art,” took place on May 4. In attendance was a selection of some our most iconic pop stars: Beyoncé, Rihanna, Sabrina Carpenter, Katy Perry. Alas, no Taylor Swift in sight.
The “Fate of Ophelia” singer has famously skipped the Met Gala since her last appearance in 2016. But why did she skip this year's Met Gala? Well, as an ultra A-lister, it would make sense she's return only if she were on the host committee or a co-chair (like Beyoncé's Met Gala attendance record as of late) and this year she is not. Much like Swift, Beyoncé has skipped the Met Gala since 2016; however, Bey made her grand return this year, as a co-chair, with Blue Ivy in tow. Similarly, Zendaya made her grand return in 2024 after skipping the event for several years. The reason for her return? She was also a co-chair.
It's also pretty safe to say that Swift was busy. Swift is reportedly deep in planning a summer wedding to Travis Kelce, and it's likely that's a huge planning endeavor for the amount of friends and family the couple have. You could say she's busy planning her own sort of Met Gala.
Still, it's nice to imagine the possibility she'll return one day to the Costume Institute fundraiser, since Swift has tons of Met Gala lore, including the night when she danced with Tom Hiddleston and apparently jumped in the “Getaway Car.”
It is true that Kelce and Swift tend to stay away from major public commitments like the Grammys and the Oscars as they like to make "the most of their time off together,” as a source told People. That said, they did make a public appearance recently at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards after months outside of the spotlight, though it was because Swift was nominated for multiple awards. She ended up taking home seven trophies, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.
We have a feeling her grand return is farther in the future. Perhaps when she's a co-chair again one day? We can only hope the couple will hit the Met Gala red carpet together. And hopefully she saw all the videos of her pals Sabrina Carpenter and Stevie Nicks singing “Landslide” together.
