When we last left the Euphoria crew, things were in shambles. Cassie and Maddy were on the outs due to Cassie's relationship with Nate, played by one Jacob Elordi, and a lot of loose ends were left untied. The HBO show is tentatively set to return for a third season in 2025, but delays have plagued production and quite a bit of time has passed since the finale of season two, which was all the way back in 2022. According to Elordi, the only sensible solution to this is to have a forward time jump, because otherwise things might get a bit… weird.
The cast, mostly young twentysomethings during season one, has obviously aged in the ensuing years; Jacob Elordi himself is currently 26. When asked by Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show about what's next for the series, Elordi seemed to be as lost in the sauce as the rest of us.
“I hope it’s soon, or they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something,” he joked. “I’m going to have a bad back walking down the hallway, you know?” Elordi is on Team Time Jump, which would (ideally) flash forward a few years to show us where Nate, Rue, Maddy, and the rest of the Euphoria characters are after some significant time has passed. (What happened to Rue's suitcase, though?) “I’m assuming that we’ll have to go forward, otherwise it’s going to seem like a weird bit,” Elordi added.
Euphoria isn't the only show dealing with delays and aging cast members. Stranger Things season five has also been the subject of speculation, given that the core Hawkins crew were literal children in season one and are now in their early twenties. However, according to the show's executive producer Shawn Levy, Stranger Things isn't doing a time jump or using CGI; they're relying on good old fashioned hair and makeup magic to help age the actors down to match their characters.
It is a Hollywood norm to have 25-year-olds — even thirtysomethings — playing high schoolers, but we're on Elordi's side here. Sam Levinson just started writing Euphoria season 3, so we might not even get it until 2026. Wouldn't you love to see if Nate gets less evil in the future?
