Heartstopper season 3 is officially here, and the cast hit the red carpet in London to celebrate the much-anticipated premiere. Jenny Walser, who plays Tori Spring, sister of Joe Locke's Charlie Spring, took us behind the scenes as she got ready at Art'Otel Hoxton, and we chatted with her about all things fashion, personal style, and her role in Heartstopper season 3.
When getting ready, Walser likes to set the vibes with music from the ‘70s and ‘80s. “Nobody can disagree with [it],” Walser tells Teen Vogue. “It keeps everyone happy, but it can be a bit of a problem for makeup sometimes because I'm just bopping away and moving around in the chair.” When she’s picking tunes from this era, she has a go-to, “I really love the band Jungle. They're always good vibes.” This time, she enlisted the help of hairstylist Paul Donovan who also happened to be a DJ previously. Makeup artist Hannah Davies handled the bopping.
Styled by Ellie May Brown and Oisin Boyd, Walser wore a satin shirt dress from Hai over matching Heist fishnet tights and Christian Louboutin pointed-toe heels. The look was fully hot red monochrome, save for her peekaboo black mini shorts from The Andamane. Though both pantsless and monochrome looks are trending, Walser’s inspiration came from her own preferences instead.
“If I'm totally honest, I just love the color red,” Walser says. “I thought there's only so many chances that you get to do a red carpet look, so I thought I might as well dress as the red carpet. I think it's just a really fun, bold look, and I just had a really good time wearing it. It's as simple as that.”
The all-red outfit is a little bit different than what we’re used to seeing Walser wear on screen. As Tori, she’s usually costumed in loungewear at home or a uniform on her way to school with Charlie. “Tori wears a lot of dark, muted colors and lots of baggy, comfy clothes, which, to be perfectly honest, I would like to steal some of what her style is because it's comfy as all hell,” Walser shares. “But generally, I'd say I wear a bit more color than she does. I definitely like a pop of color, which is something that I think she's quite afraid of.”
As Charlie and Nick Nelson’s young love story continues, we see Tori’s character develop as well. “It's been really nice that as she has grown, her style has changed for sure. She's a young woman, a young teen, and this season, she's wearing a bit more color, which [reflects] a bit more color in her personality and in her life,” Walser says.
Tori is still taking on new adventures and new looks to match, too. According to Walser, “We're now getting to see her in her going-out clothes because she exists outside of the house, so it's just nice to just make her a bit more 3D in all senses, and that includes her style.”
Young viewers and fans who are similarly still finding their personal style can take solace in knowing that they’re in the company of Jenny Walser herself. “I'm still personally figuring out my style as well," she shares, "so what I'd say is just keep evolving, have fun, try out all the different things, and there's no fixed version of you. You can just keep on evolving and experimenting and having fun.” And her styling tip? “Throw something at the wall and see what sticks.”
