On July 18, 2025, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Universal will be turning John Proctor Is the Villain into a movie, with Stranger Things alum Sadie Sink, who portrayed Shelby Holcomb on Broadway, set to executive produce.
The film will also reportedly be produced by Tina Fey (Mean Girls) and Marc Platt (Wicked, How to Train Your Dragon), with Kimberly Belflower, the original playwright, adapting the screenplay for the big screen. (Fun fact: the play is Belflower's Broadway debut.)

John Proctor Is the Villain debuted on Broadway in March 2025. The play is a modern reexamination of Arthur Miller's 1953 play, The Crucible. It is set in a classroom in rural Georgia during the # MeToo era. A group of high school girls is studying Miller's seminal work when something happens that prompts them to reevaluate the events of the classic play about the Salem witch trials and, in turn, their own beliefs and sense of power.
Since Kimberly Belflower is penning both the play and its movie adaptation, it's safe to assume the plot will remain largely the same.
