Teammates, family members, and fans of Team USA gymnast Jordan Chiles are showing their outpouring of support for the Olympic medalist after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled to strip her of her bronze medal.
On August 10 — five days after Chiles was awarded the bronze medal in the women's Floor Exercise event at the 2024 Paris Olympics — the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) ruled that she would be pushed out of the third place spot. The bronze would then go to Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu instead, and Chiles would be placed fifth.
The IOC confirmed on Sunday that there would be a “reallocation ceremony” to take the bronze medal from Chiles and give it to Bărbosu. At the initial event, Chiles earned a score of 13.66, putting her in 5th place. After an inquiry into the score, however, judges recalibrated Chiles's place, boosting her to third and unseating Bărbosu — who had already lifted her country's flag in celebration.
Chiles joined her teammate Simone Biles on the podium, along with Brazillian gold medal winner Rebeca Andrade, making up the first all-Black gymnastics podium in Olympic history. But the CAS ruled that Chiles' inquiry was filed at 64 seconds — just four seconds over the required one-minute mark.
“The initial score of 13.666 given to Ms. Jordan Chiles in the final of the women’s Floor exercise shall be reinstated,” the CAS wrote in a statement, leaving the medal ranking up to the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique. Chiles was officially ousted from her third-place position, restoring the initial order with Bărbosu in third.
Since being stripped of her medal, Chiles wrote on Instagram Stories that she would be taking a step back from social media, sharing another blank slide with just broken heart emojis. Teammates, fans, and more have since shown their support of Chiles, condemning the reversal of her bronze medal win.
