Katy Perry Wore Charli XCX’s Infamous ‘They Don’t Build Statues of Critics’ Tee

Katy Perry just borrowed a tee from Charli XCX's closet. Well, sort of! The musician is entering her brat summer era wearing a tee Charli made famous.

Katy Perry donned the same graphic tee formerly worn by Charli, posing for a photo in a cropped baby pink tee with the phrase "They don't build statues of critics" written in red. She styled the cropped shirt with two silver choker necklaces, a few small earrings, and a backward black baseball cap, staying low-key as she's currently rehearsing for her MTV VMA Video Vanguard performance.

This T-shirt has a history, and Perry wearing it is very likely a message to those who are saying she's in her "flop era." Perry's most recent singles have struggled to gain traction as she gears up for the release of her new album, 143. Then again, knowing Perry, it could also be a funny little wink at the ongoing conversation.

Charli originally wore the shirt back in 2022, just before her album Crash dropped, and it instantly went viral — and now it will probably go viral again, thanks to Perry's very strategic choice of rehearsal ensembles. Megan Thee Stallion also previously wore the same tee to attend Beyoncé's Renaissance Tour. If you want to send a message of your own, there are a handful of similar tees available on Amazon and Etsy — just saying!

Graphic tees are back in a big way, so Perry bringing back the "Critics" tee is also on-trend. Stars like Olivia Rodrigo and Addison Rae, known for their love of all things 2000s, have been leading the graphic tee comeback charge, and Charli herself recently dropped a lime green "brat" baby tee. If you're looking to refresh your wardrobe for the fall, all you need is a cheeky tee. Long live the power of a well-timed graphic tee message!
