Kevin McCarthy (R – CA) has made history as the first ever speaker of the House of Representatives to be ousted in a no-confidence vote. This followed the unique way he got the job: through fifteen votes which finally resulted in his securing the Speakership.
Kevin McCarthy’s reign came to an end when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R–FL.) introduced a “motion to vacate”. All Democratic House members voted in favor of the motion, as well as 8 Republicans, including Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Rep. Eli Crane of Arizona, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana. Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, assumed the role of speaker pro tempore in the meantime.
It’s unclear who will be voted in by the House as his unprecedented replacement (or whether McCarthy will try to regain his job). The never-before-seen removal by Congressional resolution was incited by Republican Party infighting via its hardline “anti-woke” faction.
Since this has, uh, never happened before in history, we’re not sure what’s coming next – but we’re staying on top of it as McCarthy says he’ll speak to the press later.
