If you've been online this morning, you likely already know that Kim Kardashian was held up and robbed at gunpoint at her hotel in Paris, France, a few hours ago. It was the ordeal that prompted Kanye West to leave in the middle of a performance citing a "family emergency." In the hours since news of the incident broke online, the responses have been varied: concern, outrage, and more than a few people making jokes about the scary situation.
We hope it goes without saying that this is absolutely not OK. "People making jokes about @KimKardashian tonight would do well to remember that she's a mother, a daughter, a wife, a friend," James Corden tweeted in the aftermath. "Be nice or shut up." Chrissy Teigen also took to Twitter to comment on the response: "Fame is interesting. Celebs are supposed to love you guys while also knowing you'd make a meme of our dead bodies to get retweets." A little later, she followed up saying: "Please do not think that I think celebrities are special snowflakes. I just miss empathy, in general, for everyone."

No matter your feelings on Kim or any of her family, to laugh at violence of this nature is to condone it, and make it a little more acceptable in a way. Taking this incident seriously means you acknowledge the fact that gun violence (or threats of it) is unacceptable, for anyone, across the board. What happened last night was a violent crime, not a punchline.
