If you have rewatched Kpop Demon Hunters over and over since the movie premiered on Netflix in June 2025, you're not alone. If you're wondering if we'll get a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel soon, you're also not alone. And we finally have an answer—a sequel is confirmed, and it will just be the beginning.

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released by Netflix, Kpop Demon Hunters has been stealing finger hearts left and right since its premiere, officially becoming the streamer's most-watched original animated film of all time and even earning two Oscar nominations.

The movie, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who are part of the K-pop supergroup HUNTR/X by day and demon hunters by night, as they set out to protect humanity from “an ever-present supernatural threat.” The latest threat? A rival boy band called the Saja Boys, made up of five demons in disguise with an ulterior motive.

Praised for its animation style, plot, and music, Kpop Demon Hunters has become a phenomenon with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. People want more, and Sony and Netflix are willing to deliver.

Below, find out everything we know so far about the future of the IP, together with what the directors (and Netflix) have said about a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel or potential spin-offs, including live-action adaptations.

Yes! After much anticipation, Netflix confirmed that a second Kpop Demon Hunters is in the works on March 12, 2026. Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will also return to write and direct the sequel, which will reportedly be the start of an exclusive multi-year deal with Netflix across animation.

In a statement about the confirmed sequel, Kang said, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria continued: “With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” said “We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”

Kpop Demon Hunters wrapped Jinu and Rumi's stories rather nicely, so it's unlikely that we will get a continuation of that story—if you've watched the movie, you know why—but there's plenty more to explore in the universe Kang and Appelhans have built.

Speaking to ScreenRant before the sequel was confirmed, the duo opened up about the future of Kpop Demon Hunters and revealed that there are various avenues they already had in mind to keep the IP going.

“There are always side stories, and there are things we've thought of while making this one,” Kang teased. “There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore in [sequels].”

Speaking to the BBC in October 2025, Kang and Appelhans said, “there's definitely more we can do with these characters in this world” and "whatever it will be, it will be a story that deserves to be a sequel, and it will be something that we want to see."

Though Kang told ScreenRant that there are lots of pockets to be explored, it seems that one in particular is calling her name, at least for the movie's potential first sequel, and that is giving fans more of a peek into Zoey and Mira's journey to becoming Demon Hunters. We obviously got to learn a lot about Rumi's upbringing in the first movie, but we only got tiny peeks at the lives of her companions.

“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes," Kang told Variety. “This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira – ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”

At the time of writing, Netflix has only officially confirmed one KPop Demon Hunters sequel, but, judging by the wording Kang is using, it seems like more than one follow-up will be headed our way in due time.

On July 31, 2025, The Wrap reported that Netflix is toying with ideas to potentially expand the IP into a trilogy, eyeing two more animated sequels as well as a slew of satellite projects, including a stage musical, citing sources “familiar with the company’s plans.” The streamer reportedly denied that a live-action remake is in discussions at the moment. Teen Vogue reached out to Netflix for further clarification, but did not immediately hear back.

Per The Wrap, Netflix is allegedly referring to the project as their Frozen, given the unprecedented interest and success.

At Netflix’s second-quarter earnings call on July 17, 2025, Netflix's co-CEO Ted Sarandos hinted at the future of Kpop Demon Hunters while praising its performance. “Getting it right matters. The storytelling matters. The innovation and animation itself matters. And the fact that people are in love with this film and in love with the music from this film, that will keep it going for a long time. So we’re really thrilled. And now the next beat is, where does it go from here?” he said, per Deadline.

Live-action is a no-go

Netflix had previously denied that a live-action adaptation was in the works, and the creators doubled down on the sentiment, also speaking to the BBC in October 2025. “There [are] so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation,” Kang said. "It's really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn't work for me."

Appelhans agreed, adding, "One of the great things about animation is that you make these composites of impossibly great attributes. Rumi can be this goofy comedian and then singing and doing a spinning back-kick a second later and then freefalling through the sky. The joy of animation is how far you can push and elevate what's possible. I remember they adapted a lot of different animes and oftentimes, it just feels a little stilted."

When could a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel premiere?

If you are a fan of animation, you'd know that production times are slightly longer for this medium, as each frame has to be worked on individually. However, if the movie does get greenlit for a sequel, the timeframe could be quicker, given the public's interest. According to Variety, Netflix is currently eyeing a 2029 release for the first Kpop Demon Hunters sequel.

For reference, the first movie also took a while to materialize. Speaking to Variety, Kang revealed she pitched the idea for Kpop Demon Hunters seven years before its premiere and had reportedly been developing the concept for two years prior. Sony announced the movie was officially in development in March 2021, which means it took over four years for the final product to reach our screens.

Also for reference, the animated Spider-Verse franchise, which is also a Sony title, debuted its first film, Into the Spider-Verse, in December 2018 after initially being announced in 2015. The second film, Across the Spider-Verse, premiered in 2023. The sequel reportedly started development in 2018 before being announced in November 2019. Animation then began in June 2020. A third installment, called Beyond the Spider-Verse, is slated for a June 4, 2027, release, being pushed from an initial 2025 release due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Would a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel mean new music?

We sure hope so. One of the biggest selling points of the movie has been its soundtrack, so if the movie gets a sequel, we would likely get another slew of bangers and potentially even more K-pop idols doing their own covers—after all, TWICE's Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung did their own version of “Takedown” for the soundtrack.

The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack shot up from No. 8 to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart in its second week, over KATSEYE's Beautiful Chaos and Karol G's Tropicoqueta. With the feat, it has officially become the highest-charting soundtrack of 2025. It's also the second-highest-charting soundtrack for an animated movie ever, only surpassed by Disney's Encanto, which spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2022. Aside from streaming, Netflix also submitted “Golden” for awards consideration, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. “Golden” also won Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2026 Grammys. The song has also topped the Billboard global charts multiple times.
