The One Direction bandmates started getting tattoos early on in their careers, and that trend hasn't slowed down one bit. Liam Payne, who has a plethora of body art on his arms, hands and chest, just added a new piece to the lineup in a surprising spot: his face.
As noted by the Daily Mail, Payne was spotted out in London with a teeny tiny design inked below his right eye. It's hard to tell exactly what the tattoo is, given the zoomed-in photograph, but it's a pretty subtle and small design that could easily be covered up with makeup if needed. It wasn't just the tattoo that caught our eye; Payne paired his fresh ink with the small beaded braid on one side of his head he's been wearing lately, a huge silver chain necklace, and a gray sweatshirt.
The face tattoo joins quite a collection of body art, including a lion done in 2015, a sleeve with a clock design, an ode to his birth year and a tribute to his ex, Cheryl Cole, among many, many others. Payne also got a new chest tattoo shortly after leaving a rehab facility and starting his sobriety journey; he now has "Where dark meets light" inked on his chest as a reminder of that period.
Payne has been very open about his recent struggles, including some divisive comments about his time in 1D and his relationship with his bandmates. In a new YouTube video, Payne apologized for those comments and gave fans an update on his sobriety, mental health and career, revealing that he was in treatment for about three months. "A lot of what I said came from the wrong place. I was so angry at what was going on around me and instead of taking a look inwards, I decided to look outwards at everybody else and I took it out on everybody else, which is just wrong," the musician explained. “[Because of] my own frustrations with my own career and where I kind of landed, I took shots at everybody else, which is wrong, so obviously I want to apologize for that in the first instance, because that's definitely not me.” It seems as though Payne is on a new path, and while we don't know the significance of the face tattoo, it's definitely possible it, too has meaning for the star.
