In the spirit of reminding her followers that they aren't alone, Lili Reinhart posted about her body dysmorphia on X (formerly Twitter), wondering what life would be like without it.

In a post on September 14, Reinhart opened up about her insecurity around her arms. “I wish there were more average sized arms represented in mainstream media for women. My body dysmorphia has been going crazy because I feel like my arms need to be half the size they are currently?" she wrote. “We’ve glamorized these skinny arms that, for most of us, can only be achieved if you’re a literal adolescent.”

So many of us can relate. Comparing your own body to others', particularly celebrities or images you see in media, is all too easy to do. When we don't see a wide variety of bodies represented in the media we consume, it can make us believe that there's only one way to be beautiful — or, even worse, that there's something wrong or bad about our own bodies. But even celebrities — the people many of us compare our bodies to — can have body image issues.

Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition in which you obsess over one or more aspects of your appearance. Most often, these thoughts occur around a perceived flaw that others wouldn't notice, or doesn't really exist. Many people might experience dissatisfaction with their bodies that doesn't escalate to dysmorphic disorder.

Reinhart went on to speak more generally about body dysmoprphia.

“I truly wonder how anyone survives or gets through this life without having severe BD. Maybe it’s a cruel amplified version in combination with my OCD, but damn. The amount of time I’ve wasted thinking about my arms in the last few months is insane,” she wrote. “I wanted to throw my own thoughts out there to let other women know they aren’t alone.”

She's opened up previously about experiencing dysmorphia about her acne. “I have a specific type of body dysmorphia that stems from acne,” Reinhart told Glamour in a 2018 interview. "I see any acne on my face as an obsessive thing. [It's] the only thing I can think about, and it makes me want to hide."

Body dysmorphia and body dissatisfaction in general can feel isolating, but if one thing's for sure, it's that Reinhart isn't alone in this.
