It’s been over three years since Lorde unleashed her debut album on the world and we became OK with the fact that we'd never be royals. In the time since, fans have become restless for more. Though there has been a single with Disclosure and a cryptic tweet about her sophomore effort, there have been very few details about what we could expect next from the New Zealand singer.
But that all changed late Sunday evening when Lorde took to Facebook to share a rather lengthy missive on the ever of her 20th birthday. What began as a reflection on exiting her teen years quickly turned into beautiful musings about the experiences of the past year and how those have informed her latest work. "And oh my god, it was a colossal year! One for the ages," she wrote. "I maxed out every single emotion I have in the best possible way, the colours still aching behind my eyes like this weird blissful hangover.
She continued:
But all that heartbreak, liberation, and maturity is being put to good use on Lorde's forthcoming second album. "I wrote a record about it, all of it, so much more than what I’ve written down here, and I’m in New York getting it done," she added. "I want nothing more than to spill my guts RIGHT NOW about the whole thing - I want you to see the album cover, pore over the lyrics (the best I’ve written in my life), touch the merch, experience the live show. I can hardly stop myself from typing out the name."
Fans will have to hold on just a little longer though. For how long exactly? That remains to be seen. "The big day is not tomorrow, or even next month realistically, but soon," Lorde concluded. "I know you understand."
While we still don’t have a release date, album title, or any concrete details really, this is still the best glimpse at what the singer’s been working on since we last heard from her. But before you begin beseeching her for more information in the comments section just remember, Lorde doesn’t take kindly to impatient demands. So it’s best to just sit back, relax, and read the birthday girl's note in full below.
