Leave it to Marc Jacobs to outdo himself for a major milestone: his namesake brand's 40th anniversary. The label brought out A-listers and loyal Marc Jacobs supporters on Friday night for the spring 2024 ready-to-wear anniversary show.
Attendees including Aoki Lee Simmons, Lori Harvey, Maddie Ziegler, Winnie Harlow, Sofia Coppola, and more took their seats in the expansive Park Avenue Amory in New York City's Upper East Side neighborhood. All that appeared at the start of the runway was a massive table and chairs — a 2006 art piece created by Robert Therrien (which usually has a home in Buffalo's AKG Art Museum).
Models soon emerged to soft piano music, styled with exaggerated makeup that included porcelain skin and huge eyelashes, along with massively teased hair, giving the illusion of being dolls compared to the enormous table behind them. Leading up to the show, Marc Jacobs was posting throwback photos from his past collections and photoshoots in honor of the anniversary — giving fans the sense that he may be revisiting some of his old work in this RTW collection. Instead, the label kept things fresh and proved why he's maintained his status as one of the most prolific designers in modern American history.
Marc Jacobs (the man) shared a funny (though concerning, if it was real) video of himself blowing out candles on a cake on January 29 from his SoHo offices. But the scene turned to chaos as the cake lights up in flames, with Jacobs grabbing his signature white Marc Jacobs Tote Bag and scurrying away. Let's hope there was a fire extinguisher around.
Back to the runway — models strutted past the celebrity-packed seats wearing what could only be described as life-sized doll clothes, with some resembling those beloved rubber Polly Pocket clothes of the early aughts (IYKYK). The heels were as chunky and sky-high as a Bratz doll's, and the more glamorous patterns felt akin to early Barbie.
