When the Oscars 2024 nominations were announced on January 23, it seemed as though the entire public was up in arms over Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig being excluded from the Best Actress and Best Director categories, respectively. Now, Robbie is breaking her silence on her and Gerwig’s Oscars 2024 “snubs.”
As reported by Deadline, Margot Robbie addressed the Barbie Oscars snubs for the first time while speaking during a special SAG screening on January 30, and her response is loud and clear: “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.”
While she’s clearly not pressed about not receiving a Best Actress nod, Robbie admitted she feels a bit different about Gerwig’s case. “Obviously, I think Greta [Gerwig] should be nominated as a director because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing,” the actor and producer told the audience.
Despite the uproar about the Best Actress and Best Director categories in particular, Robbie's castmates America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling both earned nods in the Best Supporting acting categories, and Barbie did in fact snag eight nominations in total, making it the fourth most-nominated film at this year's ceremony after Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and Killers of the Flower Moon, in that order.
Aside from the snubs outrage, Robbie also made sure to shout out the nominations her film did get during the screening, saying she and the team are “beyond ecstatic that we’ve got eight Academy Award nominations.” While she’s not nominated individually for her performance as the titular blonde, Robbie is nominated alongside Noah Baumbach for Production Design and Best Adapted Screenplay. “Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the Best Picture nod,” Robbie reportedly said in amazement.
Regardless of the number of Oscar nominations, Barbie’s impact is undeniable — it became the highest-grossing film of 2023 after officially surpassing $1 billion at the global box office, which made Gerwig the highest-grossing female director of all time — and Robbie made sure to give that a shout in her speech.
“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this,” she said.
“People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience," Robbie continued. "I’ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I’ve done comic book stuff, and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie has had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.” And there you have it: Barbie is too blessed to be stressed.
