Looking for new info on Greta Gerwig's Narnia movies for Netflix? Then you've come to the right place. It seems like it was only yesterday that we first immersed ourselves in the cinematic world of lions, witches, and wardrobes with Andrew Adamson's adaptation of C. S. Lewis's beloved books—but, friends, that was over 20 years ago, and we are ready for a redo.
Back in 2018, it was announced that Netflix was planning to breathe new life into the Chronicles of Narnia franchise, acquiring the rights to adapt C.S. Lewis's seven books in the series.
"It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world," Douglas Gresham, Lewis's stepson, said in a statement. "Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them toward this goal."
Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, added: "C.S. Lewis’s beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world. Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come."
It wasn't until 2023 that we learned that Greta Gerwig had been tasked with adapting Lewis's beloved franchise into “at least two movies” for Netflix, and now the project is inching closer than ever before, with casting musings enthralling fans all over the world.
So, we've combed the internet to gather all the info we've gotten so far about Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix.
Does Netflix's first Narnia movie have a release date?
It does indeed, and it has been pushed. In May 2026, Netflix officially announced that the first Narnia movie by Greta Gerwig, officially named Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, will be released in IMAX and wide theaters on February 12, 2027. The film will then hit Netflix on April 2, 2027. IMAX-only previews of the film are slated to begin on February 10, 2027. Previously, the movie was slated to premiere in IMAX on Thanksgiving Day 2026.
“Our core strategy is to give our members exclusive first-round movies on Netflix. The Narnia IMAX release is a release tactic," Netflix's Sarandos previously shared about the first proposed rollout. “We routinely release movies and theaters a couple of weeks before to qualify for awards, to meet festival requirements, and to prime the publicity pump a bit. In the case of Narnia, it’s a two-week special event, I think it’s very differentiated from other runs, because I doubt anyone has a screen as big as an IMAX screen at home.”
What will Netflix's Narnia movie be about?
Greta Gerwig's first Narnia movie will draw on Lewis's original saga for inspiration; specifically, it will be the first on-screen adaptation of Lewis’s 1955 book The Magician’s Nephew.
“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life,” Gerwig told Netflix. “I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me... It transformed me.”
In a February 2024 interview with Time, Gerwig revealed that she had been working on adapting Narnia even before Barbie began production. “As a child, you accept the whole thing—that you’re in this land of Narnia, there [are] fauns, and then Father Christmas shows up. It doesn’t even occur to you that it’s not schematic,” she said. “I’m interested in embracing the paradox of the worlds that Lewis created, because that’s what’s so compelling about them."
While a lot of people recognize the first book in the series — a.k.a. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe — because of Disney's 2005 saga, it's worth noting that Lewis also had a penchant for disregarding chronological order. The author famously published two prequels, The Horse and His Boy (1954) and The Magician’s Nephew (1955), after completing three chronological books.
Speaking to Variety in 2023, Scott Stuber, former film chief of Netflix, said that while The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the “preeminent” book, Gerwig was working with producers Amy Pascal and Mark Gordon “to figure out how they can break the whole arc of all of it.” Stuber added: “There’s such an interesting narrative form [to the Narnia series] if you read all of them.” As such, many believe Gerwig could be looking into adapting one of the prequels first.
Before Netflix announced it formally, hair and makeup designer Ivana Primorac, who confirmed she's working with Gerwig on Narnia on The Reel Girls Club podcast, let slip that the upcoming movie will indeed adapt The Magician’s Nephew. “She's going to kick off with the first book, which is The Magician's Nephew. And that one's never been done before, and it's brilliant,” Primorac said.
Who is in the cast of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew?
On April 25, 2025, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed that British actor Emma Mackey was cast as the White Witch, the coveted villain role. This would be a reunion for Mackey and Gerwig, as she starred in the director's mega-box office hit Barbie in 2023. Mackey is also known for her role as Maeve Wiley in the Netflix series Sex Education. Tilda Swinton famously portrayed Jadis (a.k.a the White Witch) in the early 2000s adaptation of the beloved books.
Speaking to E! Online, Mackey teased that hers and Swinton's Jadises will have a “different vibe."
Though details on their characters are being kept under wraps, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep have also officially joined the project. Mulligan is believed to play Mabel Kirke, while Craig could be the uncle. There's also chatter that Streep could voice Aslan.
Also leading the film are newcomers Beatrice Campbell and Lord of the Flies star David McKenna, both of whom have been spotted on location filming.
As confirmed by Netflix, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma round off the cast of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
Previously, it was also incorrectly reported that Louis Partridge had joined the franchise. A representative from Netflix confirmed to Teen Vogue that, despite a since-deleted Deadline report that circulated on social media, the British actor had not been cast in any role in the movie.
Who's doing the soundtrack for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew?
Following a report by Variety, Netflix has confirmed that Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt are working on the original score for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The duo previously worked with Gerwig on the music for Barbie. George Drakoulias serves as music supervisor for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
Has Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew finished filming?
Filming for Greta Gerwig's first Narnia movie began in the summer of 2025, with on-set photos emerging online. By early February 2026, posts started circulating claiming filming for Greta Gerwig's first Narnia movie had wrapped. Actors had been spotted filming on location in the UK as recently as January 2026. Netflix did not respond to Teen Vogue’s request for comment to confirm the news.
Is there a trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew? Or photos?
