Natalia Kills is perched on a chair at New York's members-only club Norwood, trying not to stab herself in the ear with one of the urchinlike spikes she's recently attached to the shoulders of her leather jacket. "I'm self-styled," she says of her biker-chic look. "I'm a new artist, so I have to do it all myself."

If everything goes to plan, after the early-2011 release of her dance-pop debut, Perfectionist, the 24-year-old singer (real name: Natalia Cappuccini) won't be anonymous for long. Natalia was born to a Jamaican father and a Uruguayan mother in Bradford, England, a small town four hours north of London, which she describes as being populated by "sheep and serial killers." Like a sensible star in the making, she got out of there ASAP. At fifteen, she relocated to London, joined the National Youth Theatre, and was cast in All About Me, a popular British comedy series. But though Natalia loved the thrill of acting, she started to feel constrained. "I wanted to be someone who was creating," she says, "not just interpreting."
