Warning: This post contains spoilers for season 1 of Netflix's Boots.
Netflix knows we want more coming-of-age stories, which is why they released Boots, a new gay dramedy set in the Marines starring 13 Reasons Why alum Miles Heizer.
Produced by Sony Pictures Television for Netflix and inspired by The Pink Marine, the memoir of former US Marine Greg Cope White, Boots comes from the minds of showrunner Jennifer Cecil (One Tree Hill, Umbrella Academy, Hostages) and creator and co-showrunner Andy Parker (Tales of the City, Imposters), who also both serve as executive producers alongside others.
The show, which was greenlit in May 2023 and resumed filming post-strikes between March and August 2024, is the last project from legendary producer Norman Lear. Season one of Boots arrived on October 9, 2025, and immediately claimed a spot on Netflix's Top 10 English TV list.
Praised for its poignant portrayal of brotherhood and loyalty, fans want the story to continue. But, will it? Find out everything you need to know about Boots season 2 below.
What is Netflix's Boots about?
Netflix's Boots is described as a “comedic drama that delivers an irreverent, offbeat take on the coming-of-age story,” inspired by former US Marine Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine.
The show's officially logline is as follows: “Set in the tough, unpredictable world of the 1990s US Marine Corps — when being gay in the military was still illegal — the series follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine, as they join a diverse group of recruits. Together, this ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits. With sharp wit and plenty of heart, Boots is about friendship, resilience, and finding your place in the world — even when that world seems determined to keep you in line or leave you behind.”
Netflix released the official trailer for Boots on September 22, 2025. In the trailer, which you can watch above, we see Cameron's rude awakening after signing up for the Marines with his best friend, Ray, and get a glimpse into his relationship with his mom. The trailer features a re-recording of George Michael's gay anthem “Freedom! '90.” The new version is sung by the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, a group of 30 singers, some of whom are US military veterans.
How does Boots season 1 end?
SPOILER ALERT!!!
Season 1 of Boots ends on a pretty ominous cliffhanger. After successfully completing Boot Camp, the recruits-turned-marines are celebrating their feat when Cameron is distracted by the news on TV. What news? You know, just President George H.W. Bush announcing the US is going to war with Iraq. Just what you want to hear when you've just become an active member of the armed forces.
Speaking to Decider about the finale, Heizer said: "I’m glad it ends on a little bit of a cliffhanger. Simultaneously, it’s a very powerful ending to see this beautiful camaraderie, and then this harsh reality of what they actually signed up for hits them. I think that would be very interesting to explore in Season 2, especially for Cameron, who really was just running away from his family and wanted to be with his best friend. Suddenly realizing this is a very serious decision.”
Has Netflix renewed Boots for season 2?
Though Netflix has yet to make an official announcement, both Variety and Deadline have reported that Boots has been cancelled and will not get a season 2.
News of Boots' reported cancellation comes as a surprise. On October 21, 2025, the streamer shared the stats for the Top 10 English TV list for the week of October 13–19, and Boots had climbed four spots from its first week, locking in the coveted number two spot with 9.4 million views and counting.
Not only was the show climbing the Netflix rankings in popularity, but it also seemed the cast wanted a season 2. “Dancing to keep y'all entertained til we get a S2,” Dominic Goodman, who plays Nash on the show, posted on TikTok, dancing alongside Heizer.

Speaking to Teen Vogue, Heizer confirmed just so, saying: “I think we’re all so trepidatious because the nature of shows continuing [or getting cancelled], it’s this weird world that I think none of us know anything about. I know that we all want it, but everyone’s not really letting themselves go there until they get the go-ahead for that.”
Speaking to Variety, he added: "There are a lot of stories to tell, from more of Greg’s different experiences in the Marines to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell to when it was repealed. I would do it for 10 seasons if they let us."
Back in August 2025, Deadline reported that several of the key cast members' contract options (including Heizer, Oh, Moore, Goodman, O'Brien, Burt, and Paris) were extended in hopes of a sophomore season.
Though Parker was not in the list, the actor had expressed his desire to return. “There's so many great characters...and you don’t necessarily get to see all of the characters [in Season 1]. I think we’ve just scratched the surface of so many of them. So I think it needs a Season 2,” the British actor told Decider.
Who was in the cast of Boots?
Season 1 of Netflix's Boots stars 13 Reasons Why alum Miles Heizer as Cameron, Liam Oh as Cameron's best friend Ray, and Max Parker as Sergeant Sullivan.
