Little House on the Prairie is coming back to TV more than 40 years after the beloved NBC show wrapped with Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot—which has already been renewed for a second season.
The streamer is breathing new life into Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series and reimagining the original stories for a new generation with an all-new show produced in tandem by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studio, featuring Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, Vampire Diaries) as showrunner.
“Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story,” Jinny Howe, vice president of drama series at Netflix, told Tudum. “Rebecca’s vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.”
First announced in January 2025, Netflix's reboot of Little House on the Prairie has been a long time in the making, and it's finally on the horizon with an all-new Ingalls family, a confirmed release date, and a season 2 order. Below, find out everything you need to know about Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot.
When is Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot coming out?
Netflix has confirmed the Little House on the Prairie reboot will premiere on July 9, 2026. The show's first season will feature eight episodes in total, directed by Sarah Adina Smith (101), Julie Anne Robinson (102, 103), Kat Candler (104, 105), Erica Tremblay (106), and Sydney Freeland (107, 108).
Deadline reported that production for the show's first season took place in Winnipeg, Canada, from June 2025 until October 2025.
What will Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot be about?
Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot will be based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's 19th-century book series of the same name. Wilder's seminal work was famously inspired by her upbringing and life in the United States Midwest. The series was first adapted for TV by NBC, with a nine-season show that aired from 1974 to 1983.
Speaking to Remind Magazine, original NBC cast members Alison Arngrim and Dean Butler said the new Netflix reboot will not look to their show for inspiration, but instead, “it is going back to the books.” She added, “It’s not really like a reboot; they’re not going back to Walnut Grove. They’re not going to have Doc Baker and Miss Beadle, and they’re certainly not going to have Al Burton, and all the people who were made up for the show.”
Netflix describes the new show as “part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West.” The streamer also has said the reboot will be a “fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books [that] offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
Rebecca Sonnenshine is serving as both showrunner and executive producer for the Netflix Little House on the Prairie reboot. “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old,” Sonnenshine told Netflix. “They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.”
Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Dana Fox, Susanna Fogel, and Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions also serve as executive producers. (Friendly’s father, Ed Friendly, was also a producer on NBC's Little House on the Prairie show.)
Arngrim previously defended Friendly's involvement in the series, saying: "Concerns that they’re going to run amok away from the books and make it into something weird — not happening. [Trip]’ll pull the plug on it before anything like that happens.”
Who is in the cast of Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot?
In March 2025, Deadline reported that open casting calls for the Ingalls family were underway. In May 2025, Netflix announced the main cast for the show, and it is as follows:
Alice Halsey portrays the titular Laura Ingalls in Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot. The character is described as a “bright, honest, authority-questioning young heroine.”
Netflix's description for the character is as follows: “Laura is a disruptor. Honest to a fault. Questions authority. She's our window into this adventure. An American icon in waiting. Forget your modern ideas of childhood — the stakes are high for children living in the 19th century. They have responsibilities — and freedoms — that seem extraordinary in this era of helicopter parenting. Mixed in with small pleasures and petty disputes with her older sister are true feats of survival and bravery. She is observant, tender, strong-willed, hot-tempered. She resists the bounds of 19th-century ladylike behavior — she likes to run barefoot and feel the sun on her face. She is curious and optimistic and fearless, like her father; resourceful and hardworking and honest, like her mother. She is quick to call out anyone who is cruel or unjust. She loves fiercely and unapologetically and is utterly devoted to her dog, Jack. She rubs some adults the wrong way -- too many hard questions, too much personality, too much energy -- but to the people who matter, she's a bright light. She absorbs every detail she sees around her, collecting them for stories she will someday share with the world.”
Currently 11, Halsey has been acting since the age of 7 and is best known for her roles in Apple TV+'s limited series Lessons in Chemistry, Disney Jr.'s Kindergarten: The Musical, and Days of Our Lives.
Luke Bracey plays the Ingalls patriarch Charles Ingalls. The streamer's description for the character reads: “Charles won his wife's heart by carrying her three miles through the snow to a winter dance. He's a man who'd fit in seamlessly into the 21st century. Ruggedly handsome, charming, outgoing. A farmer and a trapper. A carpenter and an artist. A poet, a musician, a skilled storyteller. The original Girl Dad. He is an optimist, always glass half-full. But he is also a wanderer. A seeker. A man forever in search of greener pastures.”
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, 36-year-old Bracey is best known for his roles in Elvis alongside Austin Butler, Monte Carlo alongside Selena Gomez, Hacksaw Ridge with Andrew Garfield, and, on the TV front, Hulu's Little Fires Everywhere adaptation.
Crosby Fitzgerald is the matriarch of the Ingalls family, Caroline Ingalls, in the show. Her character's description reads: “Caroline did not marry her husband out of convenience — they fell truly, madly, deeply in love. It was a great romance — and it still is. She’s got a playful, romantic side, but at the end of the day, she’s the one who keeps this family on track (like moms do). Caroline is quiet and patient and practical, with a core of steel. She gave up her teaching career to have a family, but that yearning for independence never quite went away. Her marriage is one of equals — something rare in the 19th century. And though her trust in her husband is tested, the strength of their love endures. ”
Crosby Fitzgerald's most notable role was as a recurring cast member in Apple TV+'s Palm Royale opposite Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, Leslie Bibb, and Laura Dern, among others. She's also appeared on The First Lady and Abbott Elementary, and will soon appear in Crime 101 alongside Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry, and Monica Barbaro.
Rounding off the Ingalls family is Skywalker Hughes, who plays Mary Ingalls, Laura’s older sister, described as her “polar opposite.”
Netflix's description for the character is as follows: “Always angling to be the good daughter, Mary is a rule follower. Obedient, quiet, and studious, Mary strives to be the ladylike one, the prettier one. Other parents love Mary. Unlike her sister, she is uncomfortable in the natural world: The sun is too hot, the snow is too cold. She loves pretty ribbons, reading poetry, and long afternoons of sewing. In other words: Laura and Mary are oil and water. Best friends and mortal enemies. They love each other deeply and hate each other intensely. But in the end, they always have each other’s backs — there is no choice but to protect each other in this wild, new landscape.”
Skywalker Hughes is American-Canadian and first acted in Joe Pickett. She has since also joined the cast of Accused. She will soon appear in Andrew Niccol's I, Object alongside Anna Faris and Andrew Stanton's In the Blink of an Eye alongside Kate McKinnon. According to her Instagram, Hughes is currently 14.
Also in the main cast are Warren Christie as John Edwards, Meegwun Fairbrother as Mitchell, Wren Zhawenim Gotts as Good Eagle, Alyssa Wapanatǎhk as White Sun, and Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann.
Additional cast also includes Xander Cole as Little Puma, Ryan Robbins as Russell Kind, Barrett Doss as Emily Henderson, Mary Holland as Jemma James, Michael Hough as Eli James, Kowen Cadorath as Caleb, Thosh Collins as Louis, Maclean Fish as Adam Scott, and Rebecca Amzallag as Lacey Aubert.
Is there a trailer for Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot? Or photos?
Netflix released the first teaser trailer for Little House on the Prairie in April. “Once upon a time, Pa, and Ma, and Mary, and Laura left the Big Woods of Wisconsin and moved to the prairie," our new Laura Ingalls recites these famous lines in the opening for the trailer. We then see the Ingalls adjusting to their new home and get a peek at their family dynamic and the relationship with their new neighbors.
Netflix also released a first-look photo from the production. In the pic, which you can see below, we get a peek at Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls, Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls in the first episode of the show. It shows the family around a covered wagon moving through a tall, grassy field.
Previously, Netflix released a few images of the series' leads during a table read, which you can see below.
Is Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot renewed for season 2?
Yes! Netflix renewed Little House on the Prairie for a second season before the first one even came out. The streamer broke the news on March 4, 2026, saying “the early renewal is just one example of a larger viewing trend: the surging demand for feel-good, heartland-rooted comfort programming.”
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine opened up about the renewal in a statement, saying, “I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive. We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”
Jinny Howe, Netflix's head of US and Canada scripted series, added, “We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of Little House on the Prairie for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut. The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
