Netflix's Never Have I Ever may have ended in 2023, but lead actor Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who played its heroine Devi Vishwakumar, is still thinking about what her onscreen character might be up to in the future — and who she might be into.
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is pretty sure that Devi and her boyfriend Ben would not have lasted through college. The star recently told People that she thinks Devi would have opened up her romantic horizons a bit more after high school. “I would think that she's probably hustling way too hard in university, doing way too much — kind of cringe but it's okay,” Ramakrishnan explained. “Knowing her, her and Ben probably have broken up. She's probably on boyfriend number eight, and I love that for her."
Ramakrishnan also added that she thinks Devi would have dated a few girls. "I hope a couple of girlfriends in there because Devi's not straight, I don't think really,” she said. “She's living her best life.”
“Somewhere out there in the alternate universe, Devi and Aneesa were endgame,” one fan wrote on X, reacting to Ramakrishnan's speculation about Devi's future. (Devi could have joined another almost-queer YA heroine, Wizards of Waverly Place's Alex Russo, who was apparently originally written as bisexual.)
In case you don't remember, Never Have I Ever ended with Devi getting into Princeton University, her dream school, and embarking on a long-awaited relationship with the aforementioned Ben Gross. Though the series ended with an open-ended finale card that read “…for now," Ramakrishnan told Netflix's Tudum that the words did not necessarily mean a surprise fifth season of the show was in the works.
“‘For now’ means, to me, that this is just a moment in time, because the rollercoaster ride of life continues," Ramakrishnan said at the time. “Devi’s still a work in progress. It’s very clear that this is just one of many chapters in a young woman’s life, which is very exciting. Life continues and you have no idea what the f*ck is going to happen.” Who knows, maybe we'll get a ten-year NHIE class/cast reunion. Just a thought!
