Noah Schnapp came out as gay publicly in January, but before he told the world, Schnapp said it was important to tell those closest to him about his sexuality. In a new interview with Variety, Schnapp said Stranger Things co-star Millie Bobby Brown made that list.
Schnapp (who spoke to Variety before the SAG-AFTRA strike started) said he told his family that he's gay first. When he started thinking about coming out publicly, Schnapp told Variety he made a list of people he wanted to tell personally, Brown included. After trying to tell her in person a few times but feeling too nervous, Schnapp said he FaceTimed Brown from a Party City store.
"I just FaceTimed her one day in the middle of a Party City and I was like, ‘Millie, I’m gay.’ And she was like, ‘Oh, Schnapper! You told me finally!’” he said.
In January, Schnapp posted a TikTok that served as his public coming out message. He used a sound that said “You know what it never was? That serious,” with text on the video that read “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared and in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know.’”
Last year, Schnapp confirmed that his Stranger Things character, Will, is gay, something he joked about during his own coming out. “I guess I'm more similar to Will than I thought,” he captioned his TikTok.
