North West is planning to whip the fashion industry into shape. Her mother, Kim Kardashian, officially dubbed her the next “Joan Rivers” in the latest episode of Hulu's The Kardashians, and her critical 2023 Met Gala rampage is the reason for it. In case you haven't been keeping up, the 10-year-old reality television heiress spent the entire 45-minute episode taking relentless jabs at her mother's Met Gala dress.
If you've already forgotten, the theme for the 2023 Met Gala was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. The theme honored the life and career of the late designer. (Lagerfeld famously helmed Chanel but also served as lead designer at Fendi for more than fifty years.) For the occasion, Kardashian went for a looser interpretation of the theme, wearing a custom Schiaparelli dress designed by Daniel Roseberry. The dress draped across her body, covered in pearls with a nude bustier underneath. Though it all appeared well on the day of, some serious fashion critiques were taking place behind the scenes, and now we are all privy to them thanks to Hulu.
West, who originally said she liked her mom's dress, eventually voiced her true feelings about the look at the most improbable time: the night before the Met Gala. In the episode, we see how, during Kardashian's final fitting, Roseberry brings up West's alleged kind remarks about the look. She nonchalantly walks past the acclaimed designer, saying, “Yeah, well, it could be just a little bit better.” Absolutely brutal, Northie.
Kardashian definitely has reason to label West as Gen Alpha's fashion police — but she's not the only one getting flamed. Below, we've rounded up every cheeky comment North West made about the Met Gala 2023, ranking them from brutal to stone-cold ruthless.
1. Yung Miami is copying North West's mom
North West is just like the rest of us. While she wasn’t attending the Met Gala just yet, she was glued to her hotel television, watching the red carpet unfold and commenting away on every single look. One of the first clips we get of West is her shouting towards the screen, “She’s pretty, but it’s just…stop copying my mom!” Who was this about, you ask? Rapper Yung Miami, one half of the duo the City Girls. Yung Miami wore a black sheer gown with pearls draped across her waist, similar to Kardashian's look. It is very on par for the oldest child to defend her mother’s sartorial choices, even if she was the outfit’s first original hater!
2. Pete Davidson, try harder next time
You’d think West might be a little kinder to her mother's former fling, but that is not the case. West was not feeling Pete Davidson's 2023 Met Gala look, and she wasn't the only one. Penelope Disick eventually joined West on the Met Gala judgment couch, adding to the extra layer of criticism. They both, in almost unison, shouted “hate it” when Davidson made his way up the Met Gala stairs. Absolutely brutal. Disick and West together felt very reminiscent of the cult-classic Clique movie. This is their official state of the union, people. North added at the tail end of Pete’s few seconds on the carpet, “You’re going to the Met Gala, Pete, not the gas station.” Yikes — but also fair.
3. Jared Leto's Choupette catsuit is cringe
Gen Alpha has spoken. The literal interpretation of Karl Lagerfeld's beloved cat Choupette was…cringe. Leto decided to walk the carpet in a huge white animated version of Lagerfeld's pet. Both Disick and West declared his catsuit was “cringe,” and honestly, we cannot blame them.
4. Kendall Jenner was North West's favorite look (but she betrayed her mother in the process)
We must be grateful that North West does not believe in lying because it makes for great reality television. Kendall Jenner, who avoided her sister during the night, wore a black sequined bodysuit with a white Peter Pan collar showing off her Amazonian legs. She paired the look with massive knee-high chunky platform lace-up boots from Marc Jacobs. We found out, according to North West by way of Jenner herself, that Kim K did not like Jenner's look. Kardashian lied about liking the outfit, but West set the record straight. While Kardashian claims you can't really take getting roasted by a 10-year-old seriously, according to Auntie Kendall, their opinion is all that matters. Jenner's look was one of the few North actually liked, which, in spite of Kardashian’s sentiments, meant more to the model. While Jenner went out slightly unscathed by the mini fashion police, it was Kardashian who took most of the punches from North's incessant need for honesty.
5. It’s giving… cheap pearls
There is no greater criticism than saying something looks cheap, especially if you're saying it to a luxury designer whose garments can go for thousands and thousands of dollars. But alas, North West, the girl that you are, said it anyway. We were already off to a tumultuous start when Kardashian, in front of Roseberry, reminisced about how this was North's first time loving one of her outfits. “This is the first time North has ever said, ‘Oh wow, this is beautiful,’” Kardashian said to Roseberry at their last fitting. West quickly retorted, “I never said ‘Oh wow.’” Stone cold.
Later, West noted that there were way too many gaps in the pearls, which Kardashian and Roseberry agreed with. The final punch, ending everyone in the room, was when West noted that the pearls looked cheap. Kardashian quickly tried to correct her daughter, letting her know that these pearls were actually quite expensive, but West did not want to hear it. She says, “I like the pearls; I just don’t like that it looks like they’re from the dollar store.” Roseberry painfully laughed, saying, “This is my worst nightmare come to life. It’s like I’m being punked the night before the Met, getting read for filth by a nine-year-old.” Roseberry, you are doing your best, but it is hard to please a pre-teen.
Honorable mention: North West 2024 Met Gala dreams
If her Met Gala commentary proves anything is that North West knows what she wants. After a strong week critiquing her mother and every other attendee of the 2023 Met Gala, West let us all know she needs to be at the next one. “I’d love to be honored at the Met Gala…2024!” West shouts authoritatively at the camera. While we do know the theme of the 2024 Met Gala, the co-chairs have not been announced, so we could possibly still be holding out hope for West — she did land a major cover this year, after all.
With her charisma, fashion sense, and steadfast personality, there’s no doubt West will be an honoree one day, and while we wait for that to happen, we can only hope to one day own our voice just as much as North West unabashedly does.
