In a move to make the series increasingly current, HBO Max's Gossip Girl reboot threw in a handful of pop culture references throughout the pilot episode, officially premiering last Thursday, July 8. Among them was a pass at influencer Olivia Jade and the heavily criticized college admissions scandal surrounding her parents, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli. As noted by E! News, Olivia has officially responded to the reference on TikTok.
In a series of two videos — one with the comments turned off, another seemingly deleted but reposted by fans — Olivia reacted to the Gossip Girl mention, in which Luna La (Zión Moreno) tells mega-influencer Julien Calloway (Jordan Alexander), "And everything will be fine so long as you win. Olivia Jade gained followers when her mom went to jail."
Olivia stitched the clip from the series on TikTok, replying with a simple "No I didn't." Then, in a video that has seemingly been deleted by Olivia but reshared by other users, she further addressed the name-drop. (Hey, if Gossip Girl taught us anything, it's that receipts last forever.)
"I am not suing anybody. I don't think I even can," Olivia said in the now-deleted video that has been reposted by TikToker @jessthereporter. "I think you're allowed to use names. I mean, they didn't ask, I didn't give consent. But that was the same thing with the college doc on Netflix. I didn't give them consent to use any of my YouTube videos."
Olivia reportedly went on to say that she hopes to be able to move on from her past, which is a theme the influencer has shared before. Earlier this year, she spoke out about being publicly shamed, explaining, "I think we're all very quick to judge. I think we're all very quick to put people down. I just want people to remember, if your feelings are hurting, if they're valid to you, they're valid. It doesn't matter if someone is going through worse…you're allowed to have a hard time in this world."
