Olivia Rodrigo's stylist took some major inspo from two classic 90s movies to produce a modern-day, coming-of-age feel to the artist's latest music video.
Rodrigo, 20, released her latest single, “bad idea right?” along with the music video Friday, which shows the singer making her way through a rowdy party and essentially asking her friends (and the audience) if she should go see her ex.
The music video has a nostalgic feel reminiscent of any 90s/ early 2000s movie that featured a huge house party — and that's exactly the look the production team was going for. Celebrity stylist Danielle Goldberg posted a collage of three photos on her Instagram Story — including a snapshot from Rodrigo's music video, along with screen grabs from the 90s classics, Can't Hardly Wait (1998) and Empire Records (1995). Goldberg wrote “90s mood board of my dreams" on the story.
Goldberg's 90s inspiration is present in Rodrigo's music video, who is shown wearing a cropped blue, long-sleeve sweater and short skirt, a nearly identical outfit to Liv Tyler's ensemble in Empire Records — even down to her sleek brown hair. The big party, however, seems to be taken out of Can't Hardly Wait, which follows a group of teenagers congregating at a massive party following their graduation.
The music video shows Rodrigo as she makes her way through the party, asking her IRL friends Tate McRae, Iris Apatow, and Madison Hu if she should leave to see an ex. As good friends do, they say it's a bad idea, but Rodrigo decides to go ahead anyways, taking her on a tumultuous journey.
“Haven't heard from you in a couple of months/ But I'm out right now and I'm all fucked up/ And you're callin' my phone and you're all alone/ And I'm sensing some undertone," Rodrigo sings in the opening lyrics. "And I'm right here with all my friends/ But you're sending me your new address/ And I know we're done, I know we're through/ But, God, when I look at you."

Truly relatable.
“Bad idea right?” is the second single off of Rodrigo's forthcoming album, “Guts,” set to be released September 8. The first single, “vampire” was released on June 30 and has already soared on the charts. Rodrigo became a household name after releasing her first album, “Sour," in 2021.
