After much anticipation, Olivia Rodrigo is finally releasing new music, and her upcoming single is surprisingly related to one of her well-documented obsessions: Twilight

For a few weeks now, Olivia Rodrigo has been teasing her return to music, leaving fans with clues and easter eggs to decipher via cryptic Instagram posts and newsletter emails that amply hinted at a June 30 release. The singer did not explicitly confirm whether it was an album, a single, or simply another teaser headed our way when the first clues were posted, but the cat’s out of the bag now: On June 30, 2023, Olivia Rodrigo is releasing “Vampire,” her first song since her debut album Sour came out in 2021.

The latest easter egg to be discovered by fans is one hidden deep within the lore of Sour. During the rollout of her debut album, Rodrigo set up the “Sour Heartbreak Hotline" as a way to creatively tease the themes of her singles and snippets of the rest of the project. Now, fans have found that calling the Heartbreak Hotline at 323-622-SOUR (7687) plays a new sound: the first fifteen seconds of what could be “Vampire.” The snippet is soft and piano-driven, and seems to lead into a ballad. Rodrigo is clearly ready to break our hearts once more.

Rodrigo officially announced “Vampire” via social media on June 13, revealing what appears to be the cover art for the track. In a B&W image, the singer poses showing her left profile to the camera donning dark lipstick and a simple cateye. The only pop of color in the snap comes by way of the intercrossed bandaids she sports on the side of her neck, where a vampire would bite, which appear in her now almost-trademark pastel lilac.

As soon as Rodrigo hit pub on the post, her comments section was filled with excitement — and a handful of Twilight references. “I know what you are,” Conan Gray, Rodrigo’s BFF and fellow Twihard, commented alongside a vampire and a purple heart emoji. He kept the gag running on his IG stories, where he posted a full-on meme referencing the same iconic scene from the movie to promote the song.

But the Twilight jokes didn’t stop there. Twilight star Taylor Lautner (a.k.a. Jacob Black in the movies) also reacted to Rodrigo’s announcement. “K WHO TF BIT YOU," he commented on the post, clearly still claiming his werewolf past. The official Twilight account also commented on Rodrigo’s post, writing: "Been waiting for this day!!!!! 😭 dreams really do come true.”

Of course, Rodrigo had to reciprocate the energy. She posted her own meme of sorts on TikTok to promote the song, using Lautner’s hyper-memed “Bella! Where the hell have you been, loca?” line to illustrate her triumphant return. Truly couldn’t have thought of a better way to do it.
