Just when we thought Olivia Rodrigo was fully focused on her music career, the popstar has shared new interest in a return to the acting world.
Olivia Rodrigo attended the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Governors Awards on January 9 to support her song “Can’t Catch Me Now,” part of the Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes soundtrack, and took the opportunity to reveal that her acting career is far from over. "I love movies, I love telling stories," the star told Variety at the event. “I just love telling stories, whether that be in a song or movie, that's really something that really excites me.”
In case the hint wasn't clear, Rodrigo went on to share her film aspirations for the future, and we are more than on board with her vision. "I really want to do a coming-of-age thing maybe before I'm actually of age. Maybe I am of age already," she quipped. Well, Rodrigo does turn 21 on February 20 — but we all know Hollywood has a penchant for casting adults in teenage roles, so we wouldn't worry about it too much.
Jokes aside, this revelation is sure to please fans, especially those who were saddened by her exit from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series after season three. "Olivia is such a good actor, which I think it can be easy to overlook because she's a world-class songwriter, but Olivia's actually an amazing actor," showrunner Tim Federle said about Rodrigo at the time.
Rodrigo's decision to step away from HSMTMTS was precisely to focus on her music. Since then, both her debut and sophomore albums, SOUR and GUTS, have climbed the charts and amassed accolades across the industry. (In case you missed it, Rodrigo's GUTS is nominated in six categories at the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards.)
Still, ride-or-die fans would know Rodrigo never fully ruled out acting. In her Teen Vogue cover interview from October 2021, Rodrigo already shared we would likely see more acting throughout her career journey but explained that she didn't want to be "pigeonholed" into only doing one thing. Now that music has become her sole focus, I guess the sentiment goes both ways.
