We are seeing red, and no, not like that. We have reflected at great length on all the various themes, trends, and silhouettes that came out of the fashion week street style portfolio this season, but there was one styling trick that cropped up again and again. You’ll be happy to know that you can probably recreate it with pieces already sitting in your wardrobe.
The “pop of red” styling trick does exactly what it says on the tin: it’s the process of adding one item – be it a top, knit, shoe, or pants – in a vibrant shade of scarlet, ruby, or crimson to an otherwise simple outfit. This can clearly be traced to the design motifs of The Row (see resort 2023), Ferragamo (spring-summer 2023), and more recently, Stella McCartney and Courrèges.
While red is often considered an extroverted color and one that symbolizes emotions of anger, passion, and danger, it is interesting to see how brands and fashion lovers alike have been translating it through a minimalist lens. Undoubtedly inspired by The Row – a brand historically known for its love of all things monochrome – many of the new-season spins on red are unprinted, with clean lines. It’s all about a “baggy jeans, white shirt, black boots, and a retina-tickling red jumper” vibe. It’s a surprisingly quiet approach for such a loud shade.
Accessories might be more appealing to those who don’t want to fully commit. Whether it’s Camille Charrière’s Gucci horse-bit shoulder bag worn with a white tank top or Kendall Jenner’s mini trench coat paired with a patent burgundy slingback – if you want to make a statement this season, a “pop of red” seems to be the way to go.
