The Conclave has spoken and it’s official — we have a new Pope. Cardinal Robert Prevost has been named the next Pope following the death of Pope Francis in mid-April, taking the name Leo XIV. But not only that, Leo XIV, 69, has made history as the first American pontiff ever — a contribution to our colorful U.S. history and the Roman Catholic Church beyond papal-inspired Met Gala looks.
Prevost was born in Chicago (Go Bears!?), according to the BBC, but his family is from Peruvian and French descent. Even better, he was a fan of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who made Prevost a cardinal in 2023. Slay. According to the New York Times, “he resembles Francis in his commitment to the poor and migrants, and to meeting people where they are. He told the Vatican’s official news website last year that the bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom.”
While the world is still learning more about the kind of Pope Leo may be, and the kind of religious leader he has been, the internet has done what they do best to commemorate the news of His Holiness’ appointment: creating hilarious memes across platforms like Twitter, Bluesky and more.
