After two thought-provoking, horror homage-laden seasons, the Pretty Little Liars spinoff series has been cancelled at Max, per a statement from the network.

The show, which aired as Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and Pretty Little Liars: Summer School for its first two seasons respectively, brought a new era of Liars into Rosewood's neighboring town of Millwood, Pennsylvania. Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, this new PLL was abundant in horror references and brought to life by stars Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Bailee Madison, Maia Reficco, and Malia Pyles, all of whom appeared on Teen Vogue's July 2022 cover.

In the first season, the five Final Girls befriended each other after receiving threats from “A” related to the sins of their parents when they were in high school. Summer School continued the thread while also delving deeper into the grief and trauma the characters faced after being attacked. Both seasons threw in nods to the original Pretty Little Liars series, including references to Ezria and the reappearance of OG show therapist Dr. Sullivan (Annabeth Gish).

The official statement from Max representatives, shared with Teen Vogue, reads: While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, we are so grateful to our co-creators, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, as well as the team at Warner Bros. Television, for reintroducing fans to this new iteration of liars who band together to fight the latest creepy villain terrifying Millwood. Their unique and modern creative vision – combined with the immense talent of our cast and crew – gave the series a fun, horror-filled point of view that paid tribute to its original Rosewood roots.

After Summer School aired on Max this past spring, fans had eagerly awaited news of a potential PLL season 3. Previous Pretty Little Liars spinoffs have not fared well, with backdoor pilot Ravenswood and later spinoff The Perfectionists each lasting only a season. The energy around Original Sin, however, seemed different, with writers and creators committed to reimagining the series in a new and legitimately scary way. It's disappointing that they only got two seasons to explore their Final Girls concept, with each season focusing on a specific character's primary journey against a new kind of “A.”

“As a fan of the original PLL, I hope that this honors it and isn’t trying to correct it or anything like that," Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Teen Vogue in 2022. Celebrate the world that Sara created in her books and Marlene created in her show — that those OGs created — and expand it rather than try to replace it.”

The original Pretty Little Liars, of course, aired for seven seasons on Freeform/ABC Family, and launched the careers of stars Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, and Sasha Pieterse. This new era of PLL girls are each carving their own path in Hollywood, with more projects on the horizon — Kinney, notably, is competing on the current season of Dancing With the Stars — and it's clear their bond and support for each other extends beyond the show. This definitely won't be the last we see of them onscreen.

“[Chandler Kinney and I] were just reflecting on the fact that the season was coming to a close and it was really hitting us, and I just said, ‘I'm so thankful for this show,'” Madison told Teen Vogue earlier this year, referring to a moment she shared at the time. “We are a family when we are here, and so we're so fulfilled in these ways that are not always given to you or guaranteed.”
