Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Prime Video's Every Year After and Carley Fortune's Barry's Bay book series.
It feels like it was only yesterday that we were all tuning into Off Campus for the first time, but not even a month after the hit show's release, Prime Video was at it again with Every Year After.
The newest in a long line of YA book adaptation projects from Prime Video, which also includes The Summer I Turned Pretty and soon Boys of Tommen, the new series aimed to captivate audiences with a story about fated firsts and second chances. The eight-episode debut season created much chatter online, and it seems the conversations won't die out anytime soon because Every Year After has officially been renewed for a second season.
Adapted from the original stories by Canadian author Carley Fortune, who also serves as an executive producer for the show, and with Amy B. Harris (Sex and the City, The Wilds) as its showrunner, the Every Year After show was one of the most anticipated summer projects coming from Prime since it was originally announced in July 2024. The series, much like some of its Prime predecessors, is being praised for its gripping cliffhangers and unforgettable soundtrack, which include songs by Harry Styles, Maggie Rogers, Gracie Abrams, and many more.
If you were scouring the internet for an Every Year After book, you won't find one, per se, and that's because Prime Video's Every Year After is an adaptation of Carley Fortune's novel Every Summer After. The title was slightly altered for the adaptation, as were some key details of the setting and characters, but the story's very basic premise remains the same.
The book, like the show, follows the story of Persephone “Percy” Fraser. Percy has spent most of her childhood summers on the lakeshore at Barry's Bay, where she met her best friend, and later, first love, Sam Florek, who's described as "the man she never thought she’d have to live without."
Barry’s Bay is a township in rural Ontario, Canada, where the book's author spent significant time during her youth. However, in the show, Barry’s Bay is actually in British Columbia, on the other side of Canada. (It was one of the tweaks for the adaptation, which you can read more about here.) And of course, season one ends with a massive cliffhanger.
Whether you've already watched the first season or are planning to start soon, Barry's Bay is calling. Below, find out everything you need to know about Every Year After on Prime—including details on the cast, the future of the show, and the comprehensive list of Carley Fortune's books in order if you want to get ahead in the story.
Is Every Year After renewed for season 2?
Yes! Prime Video announced that Every Year After season two was officially a go at Obsessed Fest in LA on June 27. “We are going back to Barry's Bay for season two,” Harris announced during a panel
Unlike various Prime Video shows, such as Off Campus and the Legally Blonde prequel series Elle, which received early renewals, fans were on edge about the future of Every Year After, especially after that cliffhanger ending, so the renewal was very much needed for closure.
“The response to Every Year After has been truly extraordinary, underscoring the universal appeal of Carley Fortune’s storytelling and the deep connection audiences have formed with the world of Barry’s Bay,” Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, later said in a statement. “We’re incredibly grateful to Carley, Amy B. Harris, our exceptional cast and creative team, and the passionate fans who have embraced this series around the globe. We’re excited to return to Barry’s Bay and bring audiences another deeply emotional and unforgettable chapter.”
Harris is also set to return as showrunner, and Fortune will be an executive producer once again.
What will Every Year After season 2 be about?
Every Year After season two will officially focus on Sam's older brother Charlie, played by Michael Bradway. It's been confirmed that season two will adapt Charlie's standalone book, One Golden Summer, which is set in the same universe and features characters the audience already knows.
In fact, season one already has some teasers. “There were definitely things that we did in the first season that we were intentional about,” Bradway told Teen Vogue. Bradway teased that he “made sure that [Charlie] acted a certain way” in relationships, “because we knew that [his love interest] Alice was going to be coming next season.”

🚨 Spoiler alert if you haven't yet watched season one 🚨
At the end of season one, after Sam learns that Charlie and Percy have slept together, their relationship falls apart. Though Percy is reopening The Tavern, Charlie is busy trying to make it big in the city and avoiding Barry's Bay. That's when he spots a picture of himself, Sam, and Percy riding a boat hung inside his boss's office. After a tete-a-tete about remembering what life is about, Charlie collapses after suffering from a heart attack, as confirmed by Bradway to Deadline.
"It was a heart attack. We’re gonna let Percy have the panic attacks. Charlie gets the heart attack. Obviously, [Charlie’s] father died from a sudden heart attack, which is a big reason why Sam wanted to be a cardiologist and to help people, because of what happened to his father. And then it just so happens that Charlie also has heart problems, and unexpectedly, he’s looking at the famous photo and he’s reminiscing, and unfortunately it hurts too much, and he has a heart attack.”
Though season two will focus on Charlie, there's still some things to explore with Sam and Percy getting back to each other and there are also other love interests we're following. Prime Video has confirmed that the forthcoming season will continue to “explore the fan favorite stories and characters from the first season.”
When will Every Year After season 2 come out on Prime Video?
At the time of writing, Prime Video has not yet shared a tentative release date for Every Year After season two. For reference, season one was reportedly filmed from June to October 2025 for an early June 2026 release. So, once we know more about when production will start, we can probably get a better estimate.
Is there a trailer or first look for Prime Video's Every Year After season 2?
There's no first look or trailer for season two yet, but you can watch the trailer for the first season of the Every Year After show below:
Who will be in the cast of Prime Video's Every Year After season 2?
The cast of Prime Video's Every Year After season two will be led by Michael Bradway (Chicago Fire, Marked Men) as Charlie Florek, who became a fan-favorite during season one. We'd also expect someone to be cast as Alice. Season one featured High School Musical: The Musical: The Series alum Matt Cornett as Sam Florek and Saltburn's Sadie Soverall as Percy.
Additional cast includes Aurora Perrineau (KAOS, Westworld) as Percy's friend Chantal, Abigail Cowen (Fate: The Winx Saga) as Sam's old friend Delilah, and Joseph Chiu (Fear Street: Prom Queen, Motorheads) as Jordie, Sam's current best friend, who we all expect to return.
Veteran Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert (Girl Next Door, Happy Endings) was later added to the core cast of season one as a recurring guest star playing Sue Florek, Sam and Charlie's mother. TBD on whether she'll return.
Are there going to be more seasons of Every Year After after season 2?
For now, only season two has been given the pickup. That said, the team behind the project has envisioned it going way beyond that.
Speaking to Teen Vogue, showrunner Amy B. Harris admitted she thinks of Every Year After as a multi-season show, with potential future seasons set at different times of the year, like fall, winter, and spring, hence the title change and why season two might arrive at a different time in the year. “I love the idea of exploring happy and complicated endings and love unrequited for all of our characters, so I certainly hope we get the opportunity to do that and continue to honor Carley’s beautiful world,” she continued.
Speaking to ELLE, Harris also said the series “should go on and on and on for as long as Amazon will have me and have the show.” She added, “I personally would love the show to live in many seasons. The book is obviously Every Summer After and takes place during the summer, and the first season does take place in the summer. But what I was intrigued by is that it isn’t just every summer that [these characters] have been…dealing with the ramifications of their behavior. That doesn’t just affect your summers; it affects every year of your life.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harris got even more candid, revealing that she has a five-season plan for the show that expands Fortune's book universe.
“We have these six main characters, and I think we'll be adding characters as the seasons go on,” she explained. “I really see this as a series, and it's why we built it the way we did, so that we can come back and explore a lot more romance. We have lots more to say both about Percy and Sam's love story, but also about these other characters who hopefully people will come to love as much as they do Percy and Sam.”
For those wanting more Percy and Sam, Harris said, “Even if you end up in a happy relationship, relationships are a lot of work, and they don't come easily. And I think that's also interesting to explore. I think Barry's Bay has a lot more story to tell.”
How to read all of Carley Fortune's books in order
If you can't wait to see how the story continues, you can always tap into the source material. As mentioned above, the show's second season, if greenlit, will adapt One Golden Summer, which is set a few years after the events of Every Summer After. So far, those two books constitute the complete Barry's Bay series, but there's even more to discover in Carley Fortune's catalog that you'll surely enjoy.
The Canadian author has published five books so far, all with summer and romance at their core. Over on her Instagram, Fortune shared that there's no particular order to her books, but she recommends reading Every Summer After before One Golden Summer to avoid spoilers and better understand the characters.
All of Fortune's books are standalone stories, even if Every Summer After and One Golden Summer are interlinked. (However, Fortune has confirmed that there are some Easter Eggs and loose connections between the books, even if they are technically not part of the same series.)
Aside from the Barry's Bay series, Fortune's books, in order of release, include:
- This Summer Will Be Different, which she describes as “a sparkling coastal setting and a story that is as much about romance as it is about female friendship.”
- Meet Me at the Lake, which she describes as “an emotional romance that deals with weightier subjects and mother-daughter relationships.”
- Our Perfect Storm, her latest release, is a childhood friends-to-lovers novel set in Tofino and centering on a pair of “angsty, stormy, stubborn, hot-headed best friends.”
If you want more Percy and Sam, we suggest picking up a copy of the 2025 collector's edition version of Every Summer After, which, as Fortune herself confirmed, features a bonus chapter set in Barry's Bay at Christmas. The chapter takes place after the first book but before One Golden Summer.
