Prime Video's Life Is Strange series adaptation is one step closer to fruition, and we now officially know which two actors will lead the production.
After years of chatter about a potential adaptation for Square Enix's popular third-person narrative adventure game series, the project left limbo and found a home at Prime Video in 2025. In September of that year, Amazon MGM Studios announced the show had been ordered to series, with Charlie Covell serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The show is a joint effort between Square Enix, Story Kitchen, LuckyChap, and Amazon MGM Studios.
“Story Kitchen has always believed that Life is Strange deserved to be more than just a game—it’s a cultural touchstone,” Story Kitchen’s Dimitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg said in a statement then. “After a decade-long journey, we’re honored to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners at Square Enix, our brilliant showrunner/writer Charlie Covell, and the amazing team at LuckyChap. Together, this thoughtfully assembled dream team is ready to share Life is Strange with the world in an entirely new way!”
If you don't want to miss an update about the upcoming release, below, we've gathered everything we know about Prime Video's Life Is Strange series adaptation.
What will Prime Video's Life Is Strange be about?
Prime Video's Life Is Strange series will be based on the original story from the critically-acclaimed video game franchise of the same name.
According to the official synopsis shared by Amazon MGM Studios, “the story follows Max, a photography student, who discovers she can rewind time while saving the life of her childhood best friend, Chloe. As she struggles to understand this new skill, the pair investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student, uncovering a dark side to their town that will ultimately force them to make an impossible life-or-death choice that will impact them forever.”
As mentioned above, the series was created and penned by Charlie Covell. Covell is best known for their work on Netflix's two-season show End of the F***ing World, based on the 2011 graphic novel of the same name by Charles Forsman, and more recently on KAOS.
“It’s a huge honor to be adapting Life Is Strange for Amazon MGM Studios,” Covell said in a statement when the series was ordered. "I am a massive fan of the game, and I’m thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap. I can’t wait to share Max and Chloe's story with fellow players and new audiences alike.”
“We’ve been huge fans of the visionary Charlie Covell for years, so partnering with them on the adaptation of Life is Strange is truly a dream come true,” LuckyChap said. “Charlie is an exceptional steward of revered IP, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have them at the helm of such an original, beloved, and culturally resonant video game."
Nick Pepper of Amazon MGM Studios added that Covell “has crafted a deeply captivating story based on the iconic video game." He also described the project as "a monumental adaptation that will captivate devoted fans and new audiences alike.”
Life Is Strange launched with the first game in 2015. The series has since expanded with other games, including a prequel called Life Is Strange: Before the Storm and a remastered version that includes both the original and the prequel. The franchise's eighth game, Life Is Strange: Reunion, comes out on March 26, 2026.
