Reneé Rapp isn’t afraid to try new things. The “Snow Angel” singer recently opened up to HighSnobiety about personal style and gave some sound advice about exploring who you are and what you want the world to see.
“It's such a joke, and probably such a bad joke, but I always say my style changes depending on how gay I want to feel that day,” she says in the interview. While there is no definitive way to “dress gay,” she goes on to explain how important it is to acknowledge your identity when building an outfit, which is something we all should be doing.
Personal style is exactly that: personal. It should make sense to you first and foremost. And, if it resonates with others, then that’s just an additional nod to the authenticity you’re upholding.
“I really enjoy when I dress hyper-feminine or appear hyper-feminine, and then people are very confused. I quite love it. It didn't use to serve me when I was a kid though, because I was like, ‘Wait, I'm gay.’ Which is such an interesting complaint, because growing up in the South, I was blessed and lucky to present in such a way that I wasn't actively looked at through a specific lens,” she continues on.
Rapp notably is all about owning her identity and that reflects often in her style choices. Whether she’s donning an oversized t-shirt and baggy pants or wearing a form-fitting slender jumpsuit, she’s continuously showing us her fashion duality. Denim more recently has become her go-to. We saw Rapp at the 2023 Teen Vogue Summit in Los Angeles wearing a fitted jean jacket and matching pants that flare at the ankle. She paired the look with a black pointy-toed heel and minimal accessories.
So while you might look towards Reneé Rapp for all your musical needs, her stance on personal style could also help you on your journey of sartorial self-discovery. And what we should all take away from her is to care less about what others think and more about what feels integral to you.
