Sabrina Carpenter might have gotten rid of her “Nonsense” outros for her Short n’ Sweet Tour, but she’s clearly making sure the live shows remain just as entertaining with plenty of other audience interaction. Her latest? A punchy joke about her alleged ties to the indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Okay, if you missed the joke, let’s go back to basics. Remember in 2023 when Sabrina Carpenter got in a bit of a row with the Catholic Church after releasing her music video for “Feather”? The video, which was filmed in Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Annunciation Parish, a Catholic church in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, caused a bit of a stir among the Diocese and led to Rev. Monsignor Jamie J. Gigantiello being stripped of his administrative duties for allowing the filming to take place.

Fast-forward to September 2024 and New York City Mayor Eric Adams gets indicted following a federal corruption investigation — which some are now theorizing could owe its genesis to Carpenter’s video. These theories can be traced back to an article by the New York Post, which notes that a federal subpoena was issued to the church to obtain information about possible business dealings between Gigantiello and his friend Frank Carone, who also happens to be Eric Adams’s ex-chief of staff. A statement the church gave the Post seemed to link this subpoena to an internal investigation surrounding the “Feather” video, according to the news outlet.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further on that review, which is still ongoing,” Diocese of Brooklyn officials said in the statement. “The Diocese is fully committed to cooperating with law enforcement in all investigations, including conduct at individual parishes or involving any priest.”

Now, Carpenter seems to be taking the speculation that her video led to Adams’s federal probe in stride, making a joke about it during the latest stop of her Short n’ Sweet Tour in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. On September 29, 2024, while Carpenter was interacting with the crowd, she sighed and proclaimed: “Damn, what now? Should we talk about how I got the mayor indicted or…” After Carpenter delivered her line, her band followed suit with a well-timed rim shot into “Nonsense,” proving their sense of humor remains untouched.
