In their latest joint outing, Sasha and Malia Obama gave us a lesson on how to mix and match trends, and we took notes. On May 11, Michelle Obama and her two daughters were spotted on a dinner outing at Funke Restaurant in Beverly Hills, rocking three very different ensembles, all with a utilitarian core.
Sasha and Malia showed off their street-style chops. Sasha opted for a staple workwear formula, offering her take on the divisive Canadian tuxedo trend with a dark-wash double-denim look. She opted for straight-leg pants, adding a brown leather belt for contrast, with a matching jacket that had the sleeves rolled up to show a lighter underside. Sasha wore her jacket buttoned to the top (IYKYK), but left the bottom two metal caps open, skipping a shirt to perfectly frame her shiny belly-button piercing for her trademark Y2K flair.
Sasha rounded off her look with a gray bag and thick black bangles on each wrist, one with gold detailing. She chose navy ballet flats with a slightly pointed toe to balance out the Canadian tuxedo. Her commitment to the color palette extended to her nails, as she rocked square French tips, many of them featuring a navy base.
Malia was the only one in the trio of Obamas to skip denim in favor of another infallible formula that plays off utilitarianism: a cute dress worn with chunky boots. The older daughter opted for a black-and-white floral-printed slip midi dress with a V-shaped neckline and spaghetti straps. She offset the dainty dress with black ankle boots and a silver chain necklace, which peeked out from her signature auburn hair.
To match the dress, Malia added a small Y2K-ish bag worn over the shoulder. And she rocked her own take on the soap nail trend with a white manicure.
Just before the sisters stepped out, their mom was spotted wearing a workwear-inspired outfit consisting of a sage green trucker-style jacket, featuring a contrasting brown leather collar, layered over a beige Henley-style top with a buttoned placket, and distressed jeans.
The matriarch of the family elevated her look with a brown leather belt featuring a round statement buckle. She opted for a green suede bag, specifically, the Valérie by Jacquemus, which also features a statement brooch-style clasp. Her other accessories included multiple silver-toned earrings and matching diamond rings, and she rocked a pearly white, iridescent, almond-shaped manicure.
Workwear-inspired outfits are some of the comfiest options out there, especially when you're busy running around. The Obamas just gave us inspo on three ways to take on these looks for the warmer months, when the nights are still cold, without sacrificing style.
