Few Hollywood blockbusters have suffered quite a creative overhaul like Scream 7. That said, slowly but surely, the seventh installment in the beloved slasher franchise is coming closer to fruition — and he finally have a trailer.
The Scream franchise first hit our screens in the ‘90s, with the late Wes Craven directing the first four installments until 2011. Scream was then overhauled and relaunched in 2022, with the latest film, Scream 6 (officially Scream VI), releasing in 2023. The movie broke box office records for the franchise in the U.S., surpassing the original film.
After many production delays, as well as cast and directorial changes, Scream 7 is officially scheduled for a 2026 release. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming film.

What is Scream 7 about?
The official logline for Scream 7 is as follows: “When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.”
“We are going to follow Sidney,” Neve Campbell told Entertainment Tonight in July 2024. “They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board.”
Who is in the cast of Scream 7?
The cast of Scream 7 has had many shakeups since the film was announced. Most recently, Variety reported that Jasmin Savoy Brown is reprising their role as Mindy Meeks-Martin in the upcoming movie. Previously, the outlet also reported that Mason Gooding was set to reprise his role as Mindy's brother, Chad Meeks-Martin.
Neve Campbell is also set to return as Sidney Prescott. Campbell notably pulled out from Scream 6 following salary disputes with the studio. Courteney Cox was in talks to reprise her role as Gale Weathers for the movie. Though she said in September that she was “still not officially signed on," a Variety report has since confirmed the actor will once again return to the franchise.
Not only that but Scream 7 has also tapped Matthew Lillard from the original 1996 movie to return. Lillard played Stuart Macher, a.k.a. Stu, in the first Scream movie. He was Ghostface's accomplice and was killed by none other than Campbell's Sidney Prescott, so it remains to be seen what Lillard's role will be in the upcoming movie.
Lillard seemingly teased that his involvement in the franchise, which was later confirmed by Deadline, would be reprisal by posting a video of himself writing one of Stu's most memorable lines from the original movie.

Another previous Ghostface is also joining the cast of Scream 7. Deadline reported that Scott Foley, who played Roman Bridger, Sidney Prescott's half-brother who was unmasked as Ghostface in Scream 3, is also returning to the franchise despite his character also being dead. However, details about his role are being kept under wraps.
As reported by Deadline, David Arquette is also reportedly returning for Scream 7. He is the third actor who played a character who died attached to the film. Arquette played Deputy Dewey Riley in the original Scream. He was married to Courteney Cox when playing on-screen lovers during the film. He also appeared in Scream 2, Scream 3, and Scream 4, before the character's death in Scream 5.
Scream 7 is also adding a bunch of new faces to the cast. Isabel May (Alexa & Katie) is joining the franchise as the daughter of Campbell’s Sidney Prescott. Deadline also reported that Joel McHale (Community) had joined the franchise as Prescott’s husband, Mark Evans.
McKenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Celeste O’Connor (Madame Web), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), and Asa Germann (The Boys) have also previously joined the franchise in undisclosed roles. And, on Jan. 28, 2025, Deadline reported that Mark Consuelos (All My Children, Riverdale) had also joined Scream 7 in a secret role.
We also know that former stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega will both not be a part of Scream 7. Barrera was fired from the franchise in November 2023 after posting in support of Palestine on social media. “It was the darkest and hardest year of my life, and I had to reevaluate everything. There were times when I felt like my life was over," she told The Independent a year after the incident. Meanwhile, Ortega exited Scream 7 the same month, citing scheduling differences with the shooting of season 2 of Wednesday.
Who directed Scream 7?
Scream 7 was directed by the original Scream scriptwriter Kevin Williamson. It marks his first time directing a movie from the franchise.
Williamson took over from Christopher Landon, who was first unveiled as director in August 2023, only to announce his exit from the project in December 2023. “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others,” he said at the time. "It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”
Production for Scream 7 reportedly began in December 2024, and Williamson confirmed that filming for the movie was underway in Atlanta as of January 2025 via Instagram.
