Like her hit songs’ meteoric rise to fame, Chappell Roan’s makeup has garnered a fanbase of its own with many recreating her style. Now, she’s one to watch on any red carpet she’s expected to attend, like tonight’s Grammys.
Over the years, Roan has received plenty of recognition for her makeup. She was featured in Sephora’s Faces of Music mini series on Hulu. MAC named her an ambassador, complete with a campaign that featured her signature makeup style.
If you’re a dedicated fan, you probably already know what inspired Roan’s look. But ICYMI, let’s break it down. In her Faces of Music episode, she shared that she decided to paint her face white after hearing people in her high school call gay people clowns. The blue eyeshadow she often wears is inspired by the stigmas of promiscuousness that come with it due to its association with sex workers and drag makeup. Roan has also emphasized how she's been inspired by drag stars and has recreated their looks like her homage to Divine at Kentuckiana Pride or her Coachella makeup. At a time when LGBTQ+ rights are being attacked, Roan using makeup as a method to represent and speak about community is all the more important.
Below, see Chappell Roan’s makeup looks and the inspirations she's shared throughout the year.
