Selena Gomez is quashing plastic surgery rumors and shutting down all speculation about her looks altogether. The actor-musician and Rare Beauty founder recently commented on a TikTok post that speculated she had undergone surgical procedures.

In the video, the creator — who works as a PA in a plastic surgery office — was asked to share her thoughts on Selena Gomez's use of plastic surgery, but she says she doesn't think it's “fair” to speculate. “I think she's been through so much in her life, especially medically related, so I don't think it's fair to speculate whether or not she's gotten cosmetic things done.”

On July 27, 2024, Gomez hopped into the comments of the video, which was originally posted in April of 2023, to say, “Honestly, I hate this. I was on stripes because of [a] flare-up.” (Gomez is likely referring to her lupus.) "I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone," she continued.

We're not completely sure what Gomez meant by “stripes,” but many commenters believe she was referring to steroids used to treat lupus, which can cause swelling and change one's appearance. Gomez was diagnosed with the autoimmune condition about a decade ago and had a kidney transplant to help treat it in 2017; she has been open about her struggle with the disease ever since.

After seeing Gomez's comments, the creator, who goes by Marissa the PA, then followed up with a new video apologizing to Gomez and sharing that she quit making speculative videos regarding celebrities and plastic surgery last year.

Gomez also commented on that video, writing, “I love you. Not about you. I just get sad sometimes.”

In 2019, Gomez talked about how her health issues can impact her body image; she even took a social media break after body shaming due to weight fluctuations. "I experienced [body-shaming] with my weight fluctuation for the first time," Gomez said at the time. “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me, that's when I really started noticing more of the body-image stuff.”

While it can be fun to gossip about your favorite celebrities, it bears repeating that they are real people with real feelings. Gomez's comments are a great reminder to think about the person behind the screen and what they may be going through.
